1872réf. 55322Washington D.C.: United States Government Printing Office 1872. First edition. Softcover. vg. Octavo. 14pp. No wrappers with printed text starting on the first page. The printed text date May 14th 1872 relays an official Executive Communication from U.S President Ulysses S. Grant granting the United States Senate's Committee on Foreign Relations' previous request for information concerning the ongoing persecution of Jews in Romania and authorizing the transfer of said information from the U.S. State Department. The information here remitted to the Senate consists of a series of 14 pieces of correspondence dated October 6th 1871 - May 13th 1872 between the then U.S Consul to Romania Benjamin F. Piexotto 1834-1890 Second Assistant Secretary of State William Hunter Jr. 1805-1886 and U.S Secretary of State Hamilton Fish 1808-1893. The initial sections include the President's order the Secretary of State's introductory statement and a full list of correspondences included in chronological order. In the 1860s and 70s - following newly established autonomy from the Ottoman empire the unification of the Principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia and the ascendancy of the newly elected Prince Domnitor Alexandru Ioan Cuza - Romania saw a new extreme wave of anti-Semitic measures laws and attitudes. At the prompting of their respective Jewish citizens a number of countries in the international community voiced their opposition to these developments and sought to put pressure on the new Romanian government. In 1870 the United States entered the fray with the appointment of Jewish-American lawyer Benjamin F. Piexotto 1834-1890 as the new American consul in Bucharest. Piexotto served in Romania from 1871-1876 and was able to improve the conditions for Romania Jews during his tenure. He promoted the ideas of the Haskalah The Jewish Enlightenment and modernization to the community and among his numerous endeavors was responsible for improvements in modern Jewish education through the establishment of the Society for the culture of the Israelites in Roumania Societate Pentra Cultura Israelit Romania. Piexotto also funded the Roumänische Post in an effort to combat anti-Semitism in the Romanian Press. Ultimately his efforts are credited for strengthening Jewish community structures in the country and ultimately laying the groundwork for eventual Jewish emancipation as allowed for in the provisions of the 1878 Treaty of Berlin. Minor age toning and smudges to pages throughout. In overall very good condition. Protected in modern mylar. réf. 9935Black & white illus. throughout. 16 pp. incl. wrappers. 4to printed wrappers staple-bound. Warsaw: Galeria Remont 1976. An extremely scarce exhibition catalogue published for Carrión’s first exhibition at Henryk Gajewski’s Galeria Remont. Gajewski b. 1948 the Polish artist and filmmaker founded this contemporary art space in a dormitory student club at the Warsaw University of Technology. The gallery operated from April 1972 to November 1979 hosting performance art exhibitions of photography stamp art and bookworks and many other events. This catalogue contains the artist’s celebrated manifesto “The New Art of Making Books” which had been published for the first time the previous year in Plural no. 41 in Spanish and Michael Gibbs’s Kontexts nos. 6-7 in English. Galeria Remont became one of Carrión’s most important international connections in the vast network of collaborators he formed. Following this show he curated another exhibition at the Warsaw space — Inne Ksiazki 8-30 May 1977 — and gave lectures and performances there related to mail and stamp art. Most of the text in the catalogue reproduces Carrión’s characteristic bold script. In a very frank artist’s statement he elucidates his pivot from Mexican literary wünderkind to avant-garde language artist: “After extensively publishing short stories and theater plays in Mexico U. C. began using language outside the mould of what is usually called literature. Since then rather than writing poems ‘in the form of’ an advertisement or a dictionary old literature under new masks he situates dictionaries phone-books ads or any other manifestations of language as autonomous structures. His aim is to reveal the beauty and richness of these structures regardless of their referential content. U. C. is still a writer — and he insists on calling himself such — who writes very little or doesn’t even write at all. This is a radical shift in attitude which enables U. C. to concern himself not only with verbal languages but also with any system of symbols he may come across. He presents such systems either in the form of a book or as a display on a wall.” A fine copy but for faint browning to the wrappers. ⧠Juan J. Agius & Ricardo Ocampo eds. First edition of this scarce bookwork. Conceived by Ulises Carrión 1941-89 it was the "July-Special" edition of Cres a bi-monthly publication and produced in an edition of 400 copies. Although it is dated "July 1978" on the upper wrapper a correction slip in this copy states that it is correctly dated July 1979. "In Alphabetical Order consisted of a set of twenty-four black-and-white photographs of a small wooden index card holder with a label saying 'a-z.' In each photograph some of the cards are placed vertically so that they stand out from the others. They are clearly different each time. The type and size of the card holder suggests that the index cards record personal details. It could be the file of Ulises Carrión's friends although all the friendships are obviously not considered equal nor do they all belong to the same social group or cultural scene. The series showed the wide range of possible categories of a single human group that has been sorted in alphabetical order."-Javier Maderuelo "An Archive Is an Archive Is an Archive Is an Archive" in Guy Schraenen ed. Some wear to the corners tiny number stamp to a front blank in volume I else unmarked. Light rubbing to outer joints. Otherwise a nice set with inner hinges intact the spines fresh and unfaded and the contents appearing unread with all foldouts intact. A popular and well-regarded memoir among the best in both the military and presidential classes. Grant finished the memoirs on his deathbed and was convinced by his friend Mark Twain to use his publisher Charles L. Webster who sold the book by subscription only. Many of the book's "salesmen" were not really professional salesmen but veterans of the war who held Grant--warts and all--in very high esteem for his leadership during the conflict. These veterans often showed up to their neighbors' homes wearing their old uniforms; it's hard to imagine saying "no" to such a "salesman. Charles L. Webster hardcover

A number of his short stories had been published in leading journals and his first play El Gran Espectáculo was performed at the Casa de la Cultura de Tlacotalpan Veracruz to rave reviews. Following his studies in philosophy and letters at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México he spent time in France and Germany 1964-65 learning both languages. La muerte de Miss O consisting of six short stories — La muerte de Miss O Y el olvido… Las palabras Graciela y yo El asalto and Como la serpiente — was lauded in an effusive review published in El Colegio de México’s Diálogos: Artes Letras Ciencias humanas. “La muerte de Miss O. 1966 a collection of six stories in which he fluctuates between psychological and realistic prose is perhaps his most well-known and highly acclaimed work. Skillfully employing the interior monologue somewhat reminiscent of both Marcel Proust and William Faulkner Carrión creates vivid and engaging characters whose psychological self-expression is tinged with realism.”––Eladio Cortés ed. réf. 143753Mexico: Joaquín Mortiz 1970. First edition and only edition number 533 of 3000 copies of Carrión's second book a collection of six short stories employing the interior monologue by "perhaps Mexico's most important conceptual artist" Torre. Uncommon on the market: we were unable to trace any other copies for sale or at auction. Ulises Carrión 1941-1989 wrote De Alemania after his language and literature studies in France and Germany. In 1972 Carrión left Mexico and moved to Amsterdam where he founded the legendary Other Books and So bookstore and event space. He remains best known for his decisive role in defining and conceptualising the artistic genre artists' book through his manifest The New Art of Making Books 1975 "in which he extols the virtues of the book as a three-dimensional medium and convincingly refutes the idea of its being an accidental container of literature: 'A book is not a case of words nor a bag of words nor a bearer of words.' Arguing that if in the 'old art the writer writes texts . in the new art the writer makes books' Carrión urged writers and artists to take advantage of the possibilities that new printing technologies such as the mimeograph had to offer to bypass the market and to form alternate distribution networks by fostering communities of like-minded practitioners" Torre. Grant a close friend of Sherman’s went on a “World Tour” after his second presidential term had ended. It has been suggested that Grant collected a few souvenirs for his dear friend while visiting Asia. When the Grant family returned from their trip Sherman greeted Grant at a reunion held by the veterans of the Army of the Tennessee. In good condition with handle missing. The piece measures 14.5 inches. General William Tecumseh Sherman and General Ulysses S. Grant were key figures in the Union Army during the American Civil War forming a close personal and professional relationship that significantly influenced the war’s outcome. Grant known for his strategic leadership recognized Sherman’s military talents early in the war and the two collaborated on major campaigns including the Vicksburg Campaign 1863 and Sherman’s March to the Sea 1864–1865. Their coordinated efforts exemplified the Union’s strategy of total war aimed at crippling the Confederacy’s resources and morale. After the war their partnership continued with Sherman succeeding Grant as Commanding General of the U.S. Army in 1869 when Grant became President. Their mutual trust and shared military philosophy played a crucial role in shaping U.S. military strategy and post-war reconstruction efforts. unknown
