Decorative Renaissance woodcut headpieces ornamental tailpieces and elaborate historiated and floral initials throughout. The book: Published in Lyon in 1566 by the celebrated Renaissance printer Guillaume Rouillé Institutionum Iuris Canonici Libri Quatuor is a compact scholarly introduction to the principles of ecclesiastical law. Arranged in four books this accessible Latin treatise examines the institutions regulations and judicial procedures of the Catholic Church offering a fascinating insight into legal and religious scholarship during the age of the Counter-Reformation. Its remarkably small format reflects the Renaissance tradition of producing portable works of learning for scholars students and clerics. The exceptional appeal of this copy lies in its magnificent manuscript binding. Fashioned from a discarded leaf of an early liturgical antiphonary the vellum retains musical notation Gothic lettering and richly coloured ornamental initials. Such bindings are tangible witnesses to the historical practice of recycling medieval manuscripts for Renaissance bookbinding preserving fragments of an earlier artistic and musical tradition within later printed books. An especially appealing example of early European printing combining Renaissance legal scholarship with the enduring beauty of manuscript illumination. Guillaume Rouillé hardcover

Two rare editions of works by French humanist and classical scholar Marc-Antoine Muret 1526-1585. Widely celebrated for the elegance of his Latin prose style Muret first rose to prominence lecturing at the University of Rome having fled to Italy in 1554 after being condemned for sodomy and heresy. A highly competent textual critic he secured a favourable reputation throughout Europe primarily due to his Variae lectiones which contain annotations and expositions of many passages from ancient authors. His works were immensely successful being issued by a plethora of publisher's in innumerable editions across the Continent well in the eighteenth-century. Richard Heber 1773-1833 English landowner and bibliophile; a founding member of the Roxburghe Club Heber acquired books for his magnificent library which Dibdin estimated to have exceeded 100000 volumes by his death and dispersed over 216 days. This item was separately lotted as no. 4719 in the first part of that sale 1834 where it sold for one shilling. Not in Adams. Apud Johannem Hulpeau, in monte D. Hilarii hardcover

On the title page of Hau Kiou Choaan; or The Pleasing History 1761 Thomas Percy quotes from Jean-Baptiste Du Halde’s A Description of the Empire of China and of Chinese Tartary 1738: ‘There is no better means of instruction on China than letting China speak for herself’. It remains questionable whether by presenting an original piece of Chinese literature Percy has really let China ‘speak for herself’; it is reasonable to argue that Hau Kiou Choaan carries as much information about China as it does about Percy’s own perceptions of this country. Whether Percy’s works and views of China provoked louder criticism or higher praise his input into the studies of China was a positive one for it contributed to an increasingly vigorous debate that would increasingly perceive differences as a source of strength not weakness.
