Hardcover, bound in the original publisher's quarter cloth and printed boards, spine lettered in red. Endpapers and boards age toned, bit rubbed. An excellent copy. ~ First edition. Rare scholar's copy from the library of renowned Egyptologist Prof. Dr. Heerma van Voss with his charming bookplate inside cover. Occasionally with his neat pencil annotations. One page is heavily annotated in pencil in the margins and includes many cross-references to other sources, a useful concordance. All the photographic plates are printed in collotype, one of the most accurate and attractive methods of photomechanical tonal printing processes. Highly skilled and expensive process, it cannot produce more than a limited number of impressions. It has been used for single-sheet prints and luxury portfolios, and since the 1950s has been abandoned by all except a few small specialist firms. Few of these plates are printed in coloured collotype, an exceptionally complicated process which consequently is seldom used in book production. Beinlich-Seeber 5570.

'With the death of Selim Hassan in September 1961 Egypt lost one of its most gifted and devoted Egyptologists. Selim Hassan published more than 50 books and articles as well as he carried out extensive excavations at Giza and Saqqara . He died however before he could revise the proofs of his publication "Excavations at Saqqara" in three volumes. I was privileged by being asked by the Egyptian Antiquities Organization to revise these proofs and complete the parts which had not been prepared during his life. The unprepared pages were in most cases those dealing with the description of the tombs he had discovered. In order to write these pages I had to visit the site of his excavations at Saqqara to obtain and record the needed data. In writing the missing descriptions I followed the same system adopted by the author in parallel cases in the same publication so that the whole text might appear as one uniform unit as if these pages were written by the late author himself' from the Editor's Note by Dr Iskander. 3 items. General Organisation for Government Printing Offices (for the Antiquities Department, Arab Republic of Egypt) paperback
18371st Separate Edition. 19th Century Boards with original paper wrappers bound inside. 8vo. 33 pages ; 21 cm. Reprinted from the Asiatic Journal. This is the first published monograph by Louis Loewe, the Jewish Silesian linguist who made major contributions to the study of Hieroglyphics and who worked as Sir Moses Montefiores secretary. Sir Moses Montefiore in his will named Loewe one of his executors, and directed that he should be entrusted with all his diaries and other private papers to enable him to undertake the task of writing a biography of Lady Montefiore. This became a biography of Sir Moses also. It was completed in June 1888, and published in 1890 as Diaries of Sir Moses and Lady Montefiore. (Wikipedia, 2017) This book includes amazing type-set illustrations of Egyptian hieroglyphics which Loewe translates into English, Greek, and Hebrew. OCLC lists 8 copies worldwide, and no copies in the United States. Ex-library with Institutional Stamp. Inscribed by the author on the front wrapper. Boards are worn. Some edgewear, with one corner folded. A few damp stains. Overall in good condition. (BR-11-52)
