1908rif. BK0171Washington D.C.: Government Printing Office 1908. 8vo cloth 218 pp. numbered 233-450. Separately issued extract from Volume I of the Annual Report of the American Historical Association for the Year 1906. Presentation inscription on the front flyleaf reading "With the regards of the author" apparently in Abel's hand but unsigned. Light scattered soiling; front hinge starting very good minus. An author's presentation copy of the prize-winning doctoral dissertation of Annie Heloise Abel 1873-1947 an early professional historian of Native American affairs and one of the first women to receive a doctorate in history from Yale. The work received the American Historical Association's Justin Winsor Prize in 1906. This work which examines the development of removal policy over several decades was among her first major contributions to the field. In it Abel traces the development of federal Indian removal policy from the Louisiana Purchase through the Jackson administration examining the successive efforts to relocate Native nations west of the Mississippi. Abel completed her doctorate at Yale in 1905 and subsequently taught at Goucher and Smith Colleges. Her research on federal Indian policy eventually led to the three-volume The Slaveholding Indians 1915-1925 an important early study of Native American participation in the Civil War and Reconstruction. An appealing presentation copy of Abel's first major historical study published at the beginning of a distinguished career devoted largely to the history of Native American relations with the United States. .
