1954ref. 021459London United Kingdom: Arthur Barker 1954. First edition.A near fine copy except for the age toning and foxing to pages. Publishers green binding with gold lettering at spine. Dust jacket is not price clipped 9s.6d intact. Some light rubbing along spine edges shallow loss at spine foot with small nick. rear panel soiled. Very Scarce. A 1954 thriller by the incredibly prolific British novelist Sydney Horler. Published by Arthur Barker just before Horlers death the book fits squarely into his signature style: fast-paced sensationalist British pulp intrigue. While a highly obscure title today Horlers thrillers typically follow a very distinct formula. "The pleasant town of Barningfield is smitten by a plague of revolting poison-pen letters signed "The Watcher". All the prominent residents suffer from the receipt of these communications many of which are couched in the vilest terms. Scotland Yard being appealed to Detective-Inspector Canover.but the credit of solving this scandal does not belong to this experienced police-officer but to a young recruit." -- book flap. This copy although not marked as such comes from the collection of noted crime collector Gary Groton. . First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good-Near Fine/Very Good-Near Fine. Illus. by Whyte. Book.
