1951ref. 226541951. Fox Features Cody of the Pony Express circa 1951 documents postwar Western comic culture through a publishing anomaly in which the interior stories of Cody of the Pony Express appear inside wrappers associated with Female Outlaws. The comic supports research into Western Americana Golden Age comics Buffalo Bill popular mythology and mid-century comic book production practices. Its mismatched format gives the issue added significance as material evidence of how smaller comic publishers repackaged or reused content during a competitive period of rapid genre publishing. Fox Features. Cody of the Pony Express No. 1 with Female Outlaws wrappers. New York: Fox Features circa 1951. Illustrated in color throughout. Original stapled pictorial wrappers. 36 pages. 4to approximately 10.25 x 7 inches. The cover lacks issue number publication date and copyright notice and the issue is sometimes identified as Women Outlaws No. 0. The interior begins with a Cody story on page 2 and contains a complete standard comic including "Wagons of Death" "Powdersmoke Payoff" "Sleepy Time Six-Shooters" "Jim Coulter's Race for Life" and the prose feature "Family Feud." The stories present a youthful William "Buffalo Bill" Cody as a Pony Express rider confronting wagon-train violence freight-route sabotage exhaustion on the prairie and frontier danger. The comic reflects the popularity of Western adventure narratives in early 1950s American mass culture while also preserving an unusual example of wrapper and contents mismatch from Golden Age comic production. Wrappers with wear discoloration and chipping to spine; interior with two small ink marks to margins of page 1 otherwise clean and complete with minimal wear; overall good to very good condition. A notable Fox Features Western comic variant combining Buffalo Bill frontier mythology with evidence of improvised mid-century comic publishing practice. unknown

This first serious biography of Jesse James in forty years is a meticulously researched and stylishly written consideration of an American icon.Stripped of the familiar myths surrounding himJesse James emerges as a far more significant figure: a ruthlesspurposeful and intensely political man who used crimes and notoriety to promote the Confederate cause during the bitter decade that followed the South's surrender at Appomattox. Stiles paints a strikingly new and vivid portrait of the period before the Civil Warduring the conflict and its aftermathboth nationally andmore specificallyin the divided border state of James's Missouri. There the great issues of the day expressed themselves in battles between those who aligned themselves with North or South.Jesse and his older brother Franksons of a pro-slavery preacher who died in the California Gold Rush and a ferocious Southern motherserved with some of the most savage Confederate guerillas. At sixteenJesse began his fighting career by killing Unionist neighbours on their doorsteps. In the bloodshed and bitterness that followed the warwe see Jesse and his fellow guerillaswith their gunfights and holdupsbecome part of the intensely brutal struggle by the White South against the racial egalitarianism and Federal power fostered by the Reconstruction. We see how Jesse placed himself squarely in this context with his thirst for attentionhis partisan pronouncements and his alliance with a rising ex-Confederate newspaper editor who helped shape Jesse's image for their common purpose. In using violence and the news media to promote a political causeJesse James was neither a Robin Hood nor a quaint Wild West figure. Ratheras his life played out across the racial dividethe rise of the Klanand the expansion of the railroadshe was a forerunner of what we have come to call a terrorist. With groundbreaking scholarship and dazzling reinterpretationT. J. Stiles has refashioned one of the great legends of American historyoffering brilliant insights along the way into both the nation and the man.
