ref. ABE-1740533517482A small archive of 14 handwritten works entitled 'Minx' comprising three erotic shorts by convicted murderer and gay author Wayne Lonergan. Lonergan was a Toronto Ontario native born in 1918 to mentally unstable parents. He dropped out of school at a young age and had several ensuing run ins with the law leading to a term at the Langstaff Jail Farm in Richmond Hill where police reports indicate that he had been making money as a male hustler. Lonergan frequented gay clubs where he met and ultimately wed young socialite Patricia Burton heiress to the Lion brewery fortune. The two became fixtures on the Toronto and New York party circuit where it was rumored that they were both acting as sexual escorts. The marriage was further complicated when it emerged that Wayne was engaging in a consensual sexual relationship with his own father in law William Burton. The pair eventually divorced and Patricia cut her husband out of her will though not before they had a son together. Lonergan eventually returned to Canada where he served in the Canadian Air Force and in October 1943 while visiting his son in New York he and Patricia fought violently leading to her death. Lonergan fled and was captured in Canada; in April 1944 he was convicted of murder and sentenced to 35 years in Sing Sing. The case was heavily covered in the media and served as the inspiration for the Kenneth Fearing novel 'The Big Clock' which formed the basis of the 1948 movie of the same name starring Ray Milland and Maureen O'Sullivan. Two more adaptations would follow: Police Python 357 1976 and No Way Out 1987 starring Kevin Costner. The murder was more recently revisited in the book 'Details Are Unprintable: Wayne Lonergan and the Sensational Cafe Society Murder' by Allan Levine 2000. The three pieces here are short vignettes involving sexual encounters between both men and women and include 'Tom Minds the House' 'Freddie the Farmer's Boy' and 'Leonard Helps on the Farm'. The letters are housed in an envelope addressed to a George E. McCann of Toronto dated 1948 and feature Lonergan's name on the recto in his own hand though it is unclear when the shorts themselves were written. A small but significant archive of material related to a sensational trial set amidst the backdrop of wealthy 1940s America. No Binding. Very Good. unknown

Saxton brother of Ida Saxton McKinley wife of President William McKinley. Saxton a prominent Canton Ohio businessman was shot and killed on October 7 1898. Annie E. George a married woman with whom he had reportedly maintained a longstanding intimate relationship was arrested and charged with his murder. The case attracted widespread publicity heightened by Saxton's relationship to the presidential family and the scandalous circumstances surrounding his death. George's trial held in Canton in 1899 became a widely followed courtroom spectacle. The prosecution sought to establish her responsibility for Saxton's death while the defense challenged the evidence against her. The proceedings brought questions of sexual morality personal reputation and the treatment of women accused of violent crimes into the public arena. George was ultimately acquitted an outcome that added to the notoriety of the case. A fragile survival of the sensational crime literature of Gilded Age America preserved in its original pictorial wrappers. Published shortly after George's acquittal Canton's Great Tragedy is a valuable contemporary account of a nationally publicized murder trial notable for its connection to the presidential family and its illuminatio. unknown books
