1944réf. 43207No Place Amsterdam No Publisher Der Höhere SS- und Polizeiführer Nordwest Nederlands 1944. ; No Date 1944. Presume 1st edition. Original pink printed paper ca 22 x 17 inches. Dual German & Dutch text. Original Nazi anti-resistance poster from occupied Amsterdam announcing that “a number of people have been shot by firing squad or on the spot in recent days for attempting to commit sabotage against the German occupying forces” and warning that “The population of the city of Amsterdam is seriously warned to refrain from anything that endangers public peace and security. Violations of this will be severely punished.” A final sentence notes in all capital letters that “TEARING DOWN OR DAMAGING THIS POSTER IS PUNISHABLE.” The handwritten date “16-9-44” is legible in the lower right corner; we presume this to be the date that the poster was originally either put up or taken down. Anne Frank's life in Amsterdam was defined by the Nazi occupation and her family's subsequent hiding to evade persecution. The Nazi invasion in 1940 led to the implementation of anti-Jewish laws forcing the Frank family to go into hiding in 1942 to avoid deportation to concentration camps. During this time Anne documented her experiences and thoughts in her diary which later became the world’s defining first-hand account of Jewish life during the Holocaust. Over 80% of Amsterdam’s 79000 Jews were murdered by the Nazis. We have been able to locate no other surviving copies of this rare original Nazi poster from occupied Amsterdam. Paper very slightly age toned as expected but colors and text remain bright and clear. A vertical and horizontal fold probably dating to the date of production remain but with no tears. An amazingly well-preserved original Nazi poster from the occupation of Amsterdam. Very Good Condition. Very Displayable B Holo2-163-5. xviii, 222 pages. Black and white photographic plates. "When the Germans invaded Hungary in 1944, they immediately shipped virtually the entire Jewish population to Auschwitz. Separated from his family, Dr. Miklos Nyiszli [1901-1956] was chosen to direct the medical pathology work carried on among the prisoners by the Nazis for the purpose of 'scientific research' in that most infamous of all concentration camps. Through the doctor's eyes, we relive not only the day-to-day horrors of life in the KZ but also witness the slow disintegration of an empire built to last a thousand years. What Dr. Nyiszli lived through few will want to believe or even read about." - dust jacket. "Tells of events which, though gruesome, need to be told and retold until their meaning for our times is accepted." - Foreword. Tight and square with moderate external wear. Foxing to top edge. Prior owner's details written and stamped upon front endpaper. Name stamped on top edge. Average wear to dust jacket which is now preserved in archival-grade Brodart.
1887réf. 417304Fitchburg Mass. 1887. Unbound. Very Good. Approximately 9" x 14.5". Old folds with neat professional reinforcement on the verso small chips and tears in the margins mostly at the corners a sound and very good example. Interesting political broadside from a little-known and relatively short-lived progressive party that was interested in printing money in order to buy land for poor people between the towns of Fitchburg and Leominster in order to make it a single city. The dating of the broadside is a little confusing: dated in 1885 but then mentions meetings in 1886 and 1887 the one in 1887 seemingly anticipates a meeting in October of 1887. One statement notes: "Our party point and plan is to improve strengthen and build up the government and remove the burden of taxes from the people and ever stand ready to receive any good move come before them and have women a chance to vote." 1934réf. 83668New York: Charles Scribner's Sons 1934. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. First edition. A very good copy with some smudging and light staining in a supplied but sympathetic very good price-clipped dust jacket with slight internal stains. Inscribed by the author: "To Dr. Hugh Stott Taylor With great appreciation for his gracious assistance and with warm personal regards. S.S. Van Dine." The English-born Taylor was a chemist who spent much of his life at Princeton and who in World War II played a prominent role in the American scientific effort directing a number of research projects and contributing to the development of the atomic bomb with his discovery of the most effective catalyst for producing heavy water. He was knighted by both the Queen and the Pope in the same month. A Chair in chemistry is named for him at Princeton. The inscription would seem to indicate that Taylor provided advice to Van Dine about the novel or at least to Willard Huntington Wright as Van Dine was a pseudonym. A Philo Vance novel filmed in 1935 with Paul Lukas as Vance starring opposite Rosalind Russell in one of her earliest roles. Charles Scribner's Sons hardcover

Number 272 of only 300 copies ever produced with a lengthy introduction by D.H Lawrence this "is a story within a story contained within Dostoevsky's 1880 novel The Brothers Karamazov. It is recited by Ivan Karamazov during a conversation with his brother Alexei a novice monk about the possibility of a personal and benevolent God". This important original translation was made by Samuel S. Koteliansky a famous Ukrainian translator of Russian literature into English. Chekov was another who benefitted from his support as well as Dostoevsky and Rozanov amongst others being the manager of the prominent literary journal The Adelphi that published works of Lawrence Katherine Mansfield and even Dylan Thomas in the rarified world of mid-20th century English letters together with Leonard and Virginia Woolf. Hence the prominence of his name on the front board under the title and geometric pattern. Obviously extremely scarce anywhere in the world. Elkin, Mathews & Marrot. "Columbus's log of the first voyage has not survived, although we do have an abstract of it, written in the 1530s by Bartolome de las Casas. However, that actually used the "Barcelona Copy" of Columbus's original log. The chart above shows the sources that exist today in green, and sources that have disappeared in red. The chart also shows where secondary souses got their original information. When he returned to Spain in 1493, Columbus gave his original log to the Sovereigns at the royal court in Barcelona. Queen Isabela ordered the log to be copied, resulting in the so-called Barcelona Copy. The original has not been seen since, however, the Barcelona Copy was returned to Columbus just before his second voyage later that year, and remained in his possession until his death in 1506. It then passed into the hands of son Fernando, who used it when he wrote a biography of Columbus in 1538. The Barcelona Copy too was lost sometime after 1554. Sometime around 1530, the Barcelona Copy was abstracted by Las Casas into the Diario. This abstract as part of his research that led to his massive work, the Historia de las Indias. So The Diario remains our best historical record of the first voyage of Columbus. On the westward passage, Columbus kept two sets of distance figures in the log. According to Las Casas, this was done to allay the fears of the crew that they had sailed too far from Spain. The abstract is mostly written in the third person, but there are a number of large direct quotes from the log written in Columbus's own first-person.". (Source: Christopher-Columbus Europe website).

He discusses his examination of the Georgia "then lying in the Birkenhead docks." The CSS Georgia was originally built as a fast merchantman named 'Japan'. The Confederate States purchased it in 1863 at Dumbarton Scotland. The ship was outfitted with guns and commissioned as the CSS Georgia under the command of William Lewis Maury.
