1936réf. 140948510Santiago Lima Pittsburgh et al.: No publisher 1936. Good. Archive of correspondence ephemera and newspaper clippings from the collection of Mal T. Melchades Thomas Montgomery. Overall Good condition with some soiling staining and toning. Born in Pennsylvania in 1878 Montgomery became a railroad traffic expert and worked in Pittsburgh Mexico Argentina Chile and Puerto Rico. This collection dates mainly from the late 1920s and early 1930s and includes the following: -1928 scrapbook mottled and stained on the front board containing Chilean newspaper clippings relating to transit. Also tipped in is a carbon copy of a letter to Senor Montgomery noting that an "unfair" complaint printed in a Lima newspaper had been instigated by an army officer annoyed that his stop wasn't more conveniently located. Other articles are more complimentary; one scrapbook entry heaps praise upon Montgomery for his skillful management of the challenges of running buses through a densely populated city with narrow streets. - 6 small leatherette notebooks dated 1923-1932 including 4 pocket diaries and 2 booklets filled with ruled or graph paper. Entries are minimal and consist mainly of names addresses and appointments. The 1932 diary was issued by the Westinghouse International Electric Company and features Spanish-language information about the company and a foldout map of South America. Moderate to heavy wear to notebooks; one lacking covers. - 2 group photographs in which Montgomery appears. The larger creased and somewhat stained is annotated in red ink and features two ambassadors as well as "yours truly." - 24 pieces of ephemera from South America including bus and tram ticket books annotated business cards and a pamphlet about the influence of communism on Chile. - Correspondence and memoranda. Includes a study of a proposed bus service between Santiago and San Bernardo an opinion piece on scheduling a proposal for Green Bus Lines in Queens and an analysis of service improvements in Argentina. The last notes at the end that "the men are impossible in Tucaman but the manner in which they are controlled is the cause of most of the trouble." Workers were discharged before an investigation then recalled when exonerated with a mea culpa from the Manager -- a manner of proceeding not likely to inspire respect. An interesting collection that sheds light on the challenges of transportation planning in the Americas. [No publisher] unknown

1809réf. 181771London: for R. Bowyer by T. Bensley 1809. Slave-trade abolition as a triumph of the liberal nation and empire First edition published to celebrate the 1807 abolition of the slave trade within the British Empire comprising three long poems: Montgomery's "The West Indies" Grahame's "Africa Delivered" and Benger's "A Poem Occasioned by the Abolition of the Slave Trade". "James Montgomery James Grahame and E. Benger rejoiced in slave-trade abolition as a triumph of the liberal nation and empire in Poems on the Abolition of the Slave Trade 1809. The book was intended to 'popularly commemorate' the 'illustrious act of the British Legislature' as the printer's advertisement announced. The abolition bill had 'vindicated our religion and our laws'. Not only was it evidence of 'the dignity of the British Empire' but it had also 'extended its influence to the. universal interest of mankind'. Dedicated to the 'Society for Bettering the Condition of the Natives of Africa' the compilation of poems celebrated the spread of Britannia's liberty to desperate Africa. The book stressed how civilized Britannia had saved heathen Africa by ending the slave trade venerating an Anglo-American pantheon of white abolitionists and downplaying the continued horrors of West Indian plantation slavery. Indeed the compilation celebrated the end of the trade as if it were the end of slavery itself" Gibbs p. 95. The engravings after paintings by Smirke include now well-known images. Smirke had made his reputation with his Shakespearean illustrations - in contemporary sales his art was out-priced only by Reynolds - but George III refused to accept him as keeper of the Royal Academy in 1804 on account of his democratic principles. Montgomery's poem was subsequently published separately and proved hugely popular. Quarto 288 x 227 mm pp. 14 ii 141 1. Engraved title by A. Raimbach after R. Smirke 3 engraved medallion portraits of abolitionists Sharp Clarkson and Wilberforce by W. Worthington after models by Catherine Andras and 9 engraved plates by E. Scriven and Worthington after Smirke one of which used as frontispiece. Contemporary half calf rebacked with red morocco label marbled sides. Slight wear to edges a little light toning and foxing. A very good copy. Sabin 50145. Jenna M. Gibbs Performing the Temple of Liberty: Slavery Theater and Popular Culture in London and Philadelphia 1760-1850 2014. unknown
