1976Sm. 4to., with numerous coloured and monochrome photographs (a number full-page) in the text; original pictorial wrappers, wire-stitched as issued, a near fine copy.
1967Sm. 4to., with numerous coloured and monochrome illustrations in the text; original pictorial wrappers, a very good, clean copy.
18168vo., First Edition, some very minor spotting (mainly marginal); original grey-blue boards, vellum back, paper label lettered in manuscript (a little chipped and faded), uncut, a remarkably crisp, clean copy. A SIGNED PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE AUTHOR TO JOSEPH STORRS, WITH THE FORMER'S HOLOGRAPH INSCRIPTION ON FRONT FREE ENDPAPER. With 2pp of publisher's advertisments of other works (including the revised edition of Hoyland's 'Epitome of the History of the World') bound in at end. John Hoyland (1750-1831), Quaker, writer on gipsies and author of other works, wrote this seminal study as a result of 'observing the very destitute and abject condition of the Gipsy race in the counties of Northampton, Bedford and Hertford'. The work is based on that of Grellman. For further details on Hoyland, his temporary disassociation with Quaker society (due apparently to his romantic entanglement with a gipsy girl) and his involvement with gipsies in general, see DNB. PRESENTATION COPIES FROM HOYLAND ARE RARE. A SPLENDID COPY IN CONTEMPORARY BINDING OF ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT AND INFLUENTIAL WORKS ON GIPSIES EVER WRITTEN.
19688vo., Second Edition, with 16 plates, some mild offsetting from fold-ins to free endpapers; cloth, gilt back, a very good, bright, clean copy in unclipped dustwrapper. A detailed study and standard reference, first published in 1959.
18958vo., with engraved frontispiece (original tissue guard present), illustrated title, printed title in red and black, and 92 engravings (26 full-page) in the text; handsomely bound in burgundy full morocco, back gilt with five raised bands, second and fourth compartments lettered and ruled in gilt, all other compartments tooled and ruled in gilt, chocolate endpapers, uncut, original gilt from backstrip preserved and mounted on new leaf at front, a most attractive copy ideal as a gift or for presentation. With small blind stamp on printed title and small stamp on half-title and last leaf of index. A lovely copy.
