1860Two Parts. pp. 56: 48. Illustrated with top margin woodcuts. 4to. Original full purple cloth binding. Edges sun faded. Owned by Judge Mayer Sulzberger (1843-1923). XLib. [Dropsie College]. Scarce reprint of the rare original 1700's edition. Interesting poems describing public houses (Pubs) in London and Westminister during the 1700's. Describes the kinds of beers they served and the sorts of people that frequented them. Wood cut images accompany each verse. Ward (1667-1731), was a humourist, of `low extraction' and with little education. In early life he visited the West Indies, and afterwards he began business as a publican in Moorfields. By 1699 he had moved to Fulwood's Rents, where he kept a punch-shop and tavern (probably the King's Head), next door to Gray's Inn, until his death. Giles Jacob (Poetical Register, 1723) says: `Of late years he has kept a public-house in the city (but in a genteel way), and with his wit, humour, and good liquor, has afforded his guests a pleasurable entertainment; especially the high-church party. A man of considerable natural parts and with a gift of humour, `Ned Ward,' as he is frequently called, imitated Butler's `Hudibras' both in his style and in his attacks on the Whigs and low-church party. Though vulgar and often grossly coarse, his writings throw considerable light on the social life of the time of Queen Anne, and especially on the habits of various classes in London; but much allowance has to be made for exaggeration" - DNB. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! 2002The story of an unspoiled island and an English family making a home by the Aegean Sea. In the early 1960s Emma Tennant's parents, on a cruise, spotted a magical bay and decided to build a house there. This book is the story of that house, Rovinia, set above the bay in Corfu where legend has it Ulysses was shipwrecked and found by Nausicaa, daughter of King Alcinous. It is also the story of the couple who have been at Rovinia since the feast in the grove that followed the roof-raising-Maria, a miraculous cook and the presiding spirit of the house, and her husband, Thodoros-and of the inhabitants of the local village, high on the hill above the bay. Tennant offers us the delights of quotidian adventures-salt water in the well, roads to nowhere, collapsing walls-all hilariously presented. That the house is still lived in and loved, with new generations coming to understand the delights of Corfu, is a tribute to the people and a special landscape which is distinctly Greek. Full of color and contrast, A House in Corfu shows the huge changes in island life since the time of the Tennant's arrival, and celebrates, equally, the joy of belonging to a timeless world: the world of vine, olive, and sea205p. John Hoyland (1750-1831), Quaker, writer on gipsies and author of other works, wrote this seminal study as a result of 'observing the very destitute and abject condition of the Gipsy race in the counties of Northampton, Bedford and Hertford'. The work is based on that of Grellman. For further details on Hoyland, his temporary disassociation with Quaker society (due apparently to his romantic entanglement with a gipsy girl) and his involvement with gipsies in general, see DNB. PRESENTATION COPIES FROM HOYLAND ARE RARE. A SPLENDID COPY IN CONTEMPORARY BINDING OF ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT AND INFLUENTIAL WORKS ON GIPSIES EVER WRITTEN.

Glavin shows how their struggle, which is taking place within Canada's legal system as well on the land itself in a series of roadblocks, is rooted in their view that their relationship to the land is one of responsibility - for the land , and to the generations to come.
