1964ref. 140721964. Collection of Civil War era lead case shot balls and fragments associated with Fort Huger Virginia documents the artillery defenses established along the James River to impede Union movement toward Richmond. Fort Huger stood on Harden's Bluff also known as Hardy's Bluff directly across the James River from Newport News. Along with nearby Fort Boykin the fort formed part of the Confederate effort to protect the river approach to the capital. Collection consists of lead case shot balls and associated fragments from the Civil War era. Case shot ammunition was designed to disperse multiple projectiles when fired and the surviving lead balls and fragments preserve physical evidence of the artillery materiel associated with the defenses at Fort Huger. The fort was an earthwork installation positioned on the bluff overlooking the James River and was named for Confederate Major General Benjamin Huger. Fort Huger's position on the James placed it within the military geography of the approaches to Richmond where Confederate fortifications sought to prevent Federal naval forces from advancing upriver. These recovered ammunition components provide material evidence connected with that defensive landscape and the artillery technology employed during the conflict. A group of Civil War ordnance relics directly associated with the Confederate defenses of the James River and Fort Huger. unknown books

1895ref. 007828Detroit Michigan: Acme White Lead and Color Works 1895. Very Good. Rare unusual paint company promotional and customer aid tool with 22 color plates which one can scroll up or down with two side roller handles. Houses are generally rather grand shingle houses such as one finds still in old upscale and formerly upscale suburban communities or old-time seaside resorts such as line the New Jersey shore. The houses today are widely known by the over-general label of Victorian or just slightly more specificet also somewhat inaccurately as Queen Anne-style homes but regardless have sprawl a charming assymmetry large windows promising sun-drenched rooms and expansive porches or verandahs typically. N.d. circa 1890s. The oak box measures about 40 cm in height 46 cm wide and about 13 cm deep. The window which reveals the scroll's panels in the front is an oblong 29 by 37 cm and of course these are the dimensions of the individual panels. The Acme company was incorporated in 1884. The paints being promoted here became popular; they were appreciated for their fast drying properties. The company later became known as Acme Quality Paints. It was acquired or absorbed by Sherwin-Williams in the 1920s or 30s. This contraption is a rare survivor. The only institutional copy of which we are aware is at the Athenaeum in Philadelphia but this copy has only 15 of the 22 plates that we have here. We believe that the same plates may have been issued in book form and in that form may reside also at the University of Pennsylvania. Condition: some side chipping or tearing of the scroll. The scroll turning becomes somewhat sticky around plate 15 -- this we believe can be ameliorated. And any user should operate the turning with great prudence and care. ref. 39350PAINT-SALESMAN'S COUNTER DISPLAY SAMPLE ACME WHITE LEAD AND COLOR WORKS. COMBINATION OF COLORS OF NEW ERA HIGH-GRADE PREPARED PAINTS. Detroit: Acme White Lead and Color Works circa 1895. Oak wood display case 19 x 5 1/2 x 16 inches w/ glass viewing window mounted in front containing a linen scroll with 22 color plates each plate 14 1/2 x 12 inches mounted and wound between two rollers each of which is controlled by an exterior nickel plated handle. Celluloid labels carefully mounted on all sides of the glass window with metal pins. First edition. An exceedingly rare example of a salesman's counter display advertising exterior color schemes of paints and trims for Victorian Era homes. The houses illustrated in this ingenious piece are composed primarily of Queen Anne Victorians Queen Anne Revival. Twenty-two paint schemes are presented in the piece including two-tone Flesh tones & Gray upper & lower siding with Dark Green trim and Red roof; French Gray siding with Bronze Green roof; Light Olive siding and Forest Green lower two-tone siding with Victorian Red roof and white trim and many others. There appear to be six main exterior architectural designs which are repeated with assorted paint color designs. All of the paints are carefully labeled with tiny images of Acme White Lead & Color paint can and product numbers. There is a record of this work issued as a standard trade catalogue by the company using the same plates mounted on linen bound in an oblong folio and the only known copy is at The Athenaeum of Philadelphia but is incomplete having only fifteen of the twenty-two plates. Acme White Lead and Color Works was incorporated in Detroit in December 1884 by H. Kirke White A.E.F. White and W.L. Davies. The manufacturing plant and offices were located at the corner of Grand River Ave. & Fourth St. They originally specialized in the manufacture of dry colors white leads zincs and putties but quickly moved into manufacturing prepared paints. They maintained a traveling sales staff of thirteen experienced salesmen and Acme was especially known for their New Era high-grade prepared paints which had quick drying properties. The plates were printed by Whitehead & Hoag Newark New Jersey. A couple of the larger labels have minor splits at t. unknown books
