What then to do about men whom the prison authorities feel they cannot handle in any way except isolation?... Jackson's book is remarkable in that it presents a model for reform." - The Honourable Thomas R. Berger. Unmarked with light wear and soiling. 1986209 pages including black and white photos of selected participants. The concept of the People's Enquiry was to gather information on the implications of CFMETR by inviting a number of experts in various fields to give papers on selected topics. The idea of having an open meeting was to provide the public with the answers which were denied them when the government turned down requests to hold a public meeting. Major-General Leonard Johnson (retired), one of the three distinguished panelists, said of the Enquiry, it was "an attempt to obtain facts, to inform the public, and to influence the activities that bear on the security of the people of Canada... Defence agreements can lead with changes in strategy and technology to unforseen and unintended consequences inimical to the security of Canadians. Because they are made and implemented in secret, beyond public security, such agreements are not subject to democratic control by an informed electorate, as all agreements affecting the lives of people should be. This is especially serious where nuclear weapons are involved." Moderate wear. Unmarked. Binding sound. Nice copy. Book

1964réf. 140721964. Collection of Civil War era lead case shot balls and fragments associated with Fort Huger Virginia documents the artillery defenses established along the James River to impede Union movement toward Richmond. Fort Huger stood on Harden's Bluff also known as Hardy's Bluff directly across the James River from Newport News. Along with nearby Fort Boykin the fort formed part of the Confederate effort to protect the river approach to the capital. Collection consists of lead case shot balls and associated fragments from the Civil War era. Case shot ammunition was designed to disperse multiple projectiles when fired and the surviving lead balls and fragments preserve physical evidence of the artillery materiel associated with the defenses at Fort Huger. The fort was an earthwork installation positioned on the bluff overlooking the James River and was named for Confederate Major General Benjamin Huger. Fort Huger's position on the James placed it within the military geography of the approaches to Richmond where Confederate fortifications sought to prevent Federal naval forces from advancing upriver. These recovered ammunition components provide material evidence connected with that defensive landscape and the artillery technology employed during the conflict. A group of Civil War ordnance relics directly associated with the Confederate defenses of the James River and Fort Huger. unknown
