réf. A9780309671576Paperback / softback. New. Marine recreational fishing is a popular activity enjoyed by more than 9 million Americans annually and is a driver of the American ocean-or blue-economy. To ensure that fish populations are not overexploited the NOAA Fisheries' Marine Recreational Information Program MRIP monitors recreational catch through a variety of in-person telephone mail-in and other surveys. NOAA Fisheries' management of recreational catch also must take into account annual catch limits ACLs established to prevent overfishing for all managed species in federal waters. While MRIP has worked to improve recreational catch surveys over the past decade the surveys were never designed to meet the demands of in-season management of ACLs. In some cases estimates of harvest have triggered accountability measures such as early season closures and reductions in future recreational ACLs which have been a source of contention with the recreational fishing community. This report presents approaches for optimizing MRIP data and complementary data for in-season management and considers alternatives for managing recreational fisheries with ACLs to better serve both social and economic management objectives. paperback
réf. A9780309476836Paperback / softback. New. On September 14 2017 the Roundtable on Population Health Improvement of the National Academies of Sciences Engineering and Medicine convened a workshop to explore the intersection of health and early childhood care and education two key social determinants of health. This workshop follows a 2014 roundtable workshop that considered the interface between the education and health sectors broadly from research and metrics to cross-sectoral partnerships and financing. The 2017 workshop continued that discussion with a deeper focus on early childhood birth through age 5 as a critical period in human development and an important opportunity for educational and related interventions. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the 2017 workshop. paperback

There are many reasons to be curious about the way people learn and the past several decades have seen an explosion of research that has important implications for individual learning schooling workforce training and policy. In 2000 How People Learn: Brain Mind Experience and School: Expanded Edition was published and its influence has been wide and deep. The report summarized insights on the nature of learning in school-aged children; described principles for the design of effective learning environments; and provided examples of how that could be implemented in the classroom. Since then researchers have continued to investigate the nature of learning and have generated new findings related to the neurological processes involved in learning individual and cultural variability related to learning and educational technologies. In addition to expanding scientific understanding of the mechanisms of learning and how the brain adapts throughout the lifespan there have been important discoveries about influences on learning particularly sociocultural factors and the structure of learning environments. How People Learn II: Learners Contexts and Cultures provides a much-needed update incorporating insights gained from this research over the past decade. The book expands on the foundation laid out in the 2000 report and takes an in-depth look at the constellation of influences that affect individual learning. How People Learn II will become an indispensable resource to understand learning throughout the lifespan for educators of students and adults. paperback
réf. A9780309468800Paperback / softback. New. Decades of continuous efforts to address known hazards in the national airspace system NAS and to respond to issues illuminated by analysis of incidents and accidents have made commercial airlines the safest mode of transportation. The task of maintaining a high level of safety for commercial airlines is complicated by the dynamic nature of the NAS. The number of flights by commercial transports is increasing; air traffic control systems and procedures are being modernized to increase the capacity and efficiency of the NAS; increasingly autonomous systems are being developed for aircraft and ground systems and small aircraftaEURO"most notably unmanned aircraft systemsaEURO"are becoming much more prevalent. As the NAS evolves to accommodate these changes aviation safety programs will also need to evolve to ensure that changes to the NAS do not inadvertently introduce new risks. Real-time system-wide safety assurance RSSA is one of six focus areas for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration NASA aeronautics program. NASA envisions that an RSSA system would provide a continuum of information analysis and assessment that supports awareness and action to mitigate risks to safety. Maintaining the safety of the NAS as it evolves will require a wide range of safety systems and practices some of which are already in place and many of which need to be developed. This report identifies challenges to establishing an RSSA system and the high-priority research that should be implemented by NASA and other interested parties in government industry and academia to expedite development of such a system. paperback

réf. A9780309490917Paperback / softback. New. Pain is a leading cause of disability globally. The dramatic increase in opioid prescriptions within the past decade in the United States has contributed to the opioid epidemic the country currently faces magnifying the need for longer term solutions to treat pain. The substantial burden of pain and the ongoing opioid crisis have attracted increased attention in medical and public policy communities resulting in a revolution in thinking about how pain is managed. This new thinking acknowledges the complexity and biopsychosocial nature of the pain experience and the need for multifaceted pain management approaches with both pharmacological and nonpharmacological therapies. The magnitude and urgency of the twin problems of chronic pain and opioid addiction combined with the changing landscape of pain management prompted the National Academies of Sciences Engineering and Medicine to convene a workshop on December 4aEURO"5 2018 in Washington DC. The workshop brought together a diverse group of stakeholders to discuss the current status of nonpharmacological approaches to pain management gaps and future directions. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop. paperback
