1999réf. 014898London: Kluwer Academic Publishers 1999. Cloth/Laminated Boards. Like New/No d/j as Published. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Type: Book From the pre-historic era to modern times cereal grains have been the most important source of human nutrition and have helped sustain the increasing population and the development of human civilization. In order to meet the food needs of the 21st century food production must be doubled by the year 2025 and nearly tripled by 2050. Such enormous increases in food productivity cannot be brought about by relying entirely on conventional breeding methods especially on less land per capita with poor quality and quantity of water and under rapidly deteriorating environmental conditions. Complementing and supplementing the breeding of major food crops such as the cereals which together account for 66 per cent of the world food supply with molecular breeding and genetic manipulation may well provide a grace period of about 50 years in which to control population growth and achieve sustainable development. In this volume leading world experts on cereal biotechnology describe the production and commercialization of the first generation of transgenic cereals designed to substantially reduce or prevent the enormous losses to cereal productivity caused by competition with weeds and by various pests and pathogens which is an important first step in that direction. 402pp. Kluwer Academic Publishers hardcover

Type: Book These are the proceedings of the 1st International Peptide Symposium held in Kyoto Japan in December 1997. Science and technology in this area has advanced considerably allowing traditional peptide chemists to expand into areas of peptide science encompassing physics biology and medicine. Furthermore improvements in procedures for chemical and bio-syntheses purification analysis and related areas have removed barriers with respect to the size of molecules. These proceedings include plenary lectures and oral and poster presentations collected from a wide diversity of topics providing a comprehensive overview of the field of peptide science. 842pp.N.B.Some fading to base of spine. Type: Book The Fifth International Workshop on Seeds was held at the University of Reading UK from 10 to 15 September 1995. Some 230 seed scientists from a wide range of disciplines botanists biochemists ecologists agriculturalists foresters and commercial seedsmen from 31 countries Europe the Americas and Asia participated in the workshop. A large number of oral and poster presentations was made during the workshop and we are pleased to publish so many of them in these Proceedings. The papers herein are listed by the sessions in which they were presented but as is often the case many papers cover a broader range of topics than the session titles imply. For seed physiologists ecologists and technologists this book collates much of the current research on seeds. 823pp. Kluwer Academic Publishers hardcover
1998réf. 015194London: Kluwer Academic Publishers 1998. Cloth. Very Good/No d/j as Published. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Type: Book Diazotrophic bacteria convert atmospheric nitrogen to plant-useable form and this input of nitrogen through biological fixation is of great agronomic importance. The contributions presented in this volume relate to free-living nitrogen fixers and the diazotrophs associated with plants. Symbiotic association of Frankia with non-legumes and cyanobacterial associations are also discussed. Research topics covered in this volume include the biochemistry and genetics of diazotrophs recent developments in improvement of plant-microbe interactions and their molecular basis the use of molecular probes in taxonomy and ecology of diazotrophs and reports on field applications agronomic importance and improvement in methodologies for assessing their contribution to plants. This book provides valuable information not only for researchers working in the field of biological nitrogen fixation but also for biochemistry molecular biologists microbiologists and agronomists.360pp.N.B.Slight marking to base of spine and one inch adjacent front and rear boards where label removed. Type: Book During the last 40 years the study of the biological basis of aging has progressed tremendously and it has now become an independent and respectable field of study and research. This volume on "Aging of Organs and Systems" is an attempt to bring understanding to both the aging process and the disease processes of old age. Bringing together contributions from an international team of authors it will be of interest to graduates and postgraduates in the fields of medicine and nursing researchers of different aspects of biogerontology and those in the pharmaceutical cosmeceutical nutraceutical and health-care industry.Biology of Aging and Its Modulation Volume 3. 318pp.Bottom right corner front board slightly bumped. 2001réf. 014718Kluwer Academic Publishers 2001. Second Edition. Cloth/Laminated Boards. Like New/No d/j as Published. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Type: Book Competition is one of the most important factors controlling the distribution and abundance of living creatures. Sperm cells racing up reproductive tracts beetle larvae battling inside single seeds birds defending territories and trees interfering with the light available to neighbours are all engaged in competition for limited resources. Along with predation and mutualism competition is one of the three major biological forces that assemble living communities. Recent experimental work much of it only from the last few decades of the 20th century has enhanced human knowledge of the prevalence of competition in nature. There are acacia trees that use ants to damage vines beetles that compete in arenas for access to dung balls tadpoles that apparently poison their neighbours birds that smash the eggs of potential competitors and plants that associate with fungi in order to increase access to soil resources. While intended as an up-to-date reference work on the state of this branch of ecology the many non-technical examples should make interesting reading for those with a general interest in nature. Greatly expanded from the first prize-winning edition there are entire new chapters including one on resources and another on competition gradients in nature. The author freely ranges across all major taxonomic groups in search of evidence. The question of whether competition occurs is no longer useful the author maintains; rather the challenge is to determine when and where each kind of competition is important in natural systems. For this reason variants of competition such as intensity asymmetry and hierarchies are singled out for particular attention. The book concludes with the difficulties of finding general principles in complex ecological communities and illustrates the limitations on knowledge that arise out of the biased conduct of scientists themselves. Competition can be found elsewhere in living systems other than ecological communities at sub-microscopic scales in the interactions of enzymes and neural pathways and over large geographic areas in the spread of human populations and contrasting ideas about the world. Human societies are therefore also examined for evidence of the kinds of competition found among other living organisms. Using an array of historical examples including Biblical conflicts the use of noblemen's sons in the Crusades the Viking raids in Europe strategic bombing campaigns in the Second World War and ethnic battles of the Balkans the book illustrates how most of the aspects of competition illustrated with plants and animals can be extended to the interactions of human beings and their societies.552pp. Kluwer Academic Publishers hardcover

Type: Book The book first offers a theoretical framework for understanding the features of international agreements on climate then shows different integrated assessment modelling approaches designed to analyse the impact of possible agreements of emissions abatement and the related costs. Potential implications of the Kyoto agreement institutional and legal issues and the political economy behind international agreements on climate are not neglected thus providing a comprehensive albeit preliminary exploration of crucial aspects of current negotiations on climate. 229pp. Kluwer Academic Publishers hardcover
