2009ref. 37234University of Texas Press. Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket. Hardcover. Very faint shelfwear. DJ spine sunned.; In Vergil's Aeneid the poet implies that those who have been initiated into mystery cults enjoy a blessed situation both in life and after death. This collection of essays brings new insight to the study of mystic cults in the ancient world particularly those that flourished in Magna Graecia essentially the area of present-day Southern Italy and Sicily. Implementing a variety of methodologies the contributors to Mystic Cults in Magna Graecia examine an array of features associated with such "mystery religions" that were concerned with individual salvation through initiation and hidden knowledge rather than civic cults directed toward Olympian deities usually associated with Greek religion. Contributors present contemporary theories of ancient religion field reports from recent archaeological work and other frameworks for exploring mystic cults in general and individual deities specifically with observations about cultural interactions throughout. Topics include Dionysos and Orpheus the Goddess Cults Isis in Italy and Roman Mithras explored by an international array of scholars including Giulia Sfameni Gasparro "Aspects of the Cult of Demeter in Magna Graecia" and Alberto Bernabé "Imago Inferorum Orphica". The resulting volume illuminates this often misunderstood range of religious phenomena.; 9.0 X 5.9 X 1.0 inches; 390 pages . 2009. 0292719027 . University of Texas Press hardcover

2009ref. 37158University of Toronto Press. Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. Hardcover. Gift inscription from author to Bonnie MacLachlan on ffep. Else fine. DJ has very minor shelfwear.; The Robson Classical Lectures; 256 pages; Based on Elaine Fantham's 2004 Robson lectures Latin Poets and Italian Gods reconstructs the response of Roman poets in the late republic and Augustan age to the rural cults of central Italy. Study of Roman gods is often limited to the grand equivalents of the Olympian Greek deities such as Jupiter Mars and Juno. However real-life Italians gave a lot of their affection and loyalty to humbler gods with no Greek equivalent: local nymphs who supplied healing waters the great Tiber river and other lesser rivers the lusty garden god Priapus and more. Latin Poets and Italian Gods surveys the representation of these old country gods in poets from Plautus to Statius. Fantham offers historical and epigraphic evidence of worship offered to these colourful lesser spirits and reveals the emotional importance of local Italian deities to the sophisticated poets of the Augustan age.; Signed by Author . 2009. 1442640596 . Very faint shelfwear to book else fine.; This book deals specifically with sixteenth-century depictions of the Olympian deities the twelve supreme deities of ancient Greece and Rome. As the Renaissance revived several aspects of antiquity some great works of art represented the Olympians in imitation of the classical style. These deities were rendered as autonomous figures in the form of representation adapted for depicting saints and Christian rulers. This form of depicting the Olympians or the pagan gods was not unanimously accepted by sixteenth-century viewers. The book highlights the problematic framework surrounding the creation display and acceptance of such thought-provoking works of art.; 9.7 X 7.2 X 1.0 inches; 318 pages . 2003. 0521815762 .
