Dustjacket has faint creasing; 0.85 x 9.32 x 6.32 Inches; 240 pages; Theseus is celebrated as the greatest of Athenian heroes. This work explores what he meant to the Athenians at the height of their city-state in the fifth century B. C. Assembling material that has been scattered in scholarly works Henry Walker examines the evidence for the development of themyth and cult of Theseus in the archaic age. He then looks to major works of classical literature in which Theseus figures exploring the contradictions between the archaic primitive side of his character and his refurbished image as the patron of democracy. His ambiguous nature as outsider flouting accepted standards of behavior while at the same time being a hero-king and a representative of higher ideals is analyzed through his representations in the work of Bacchylides Euripides and Sophocles. This is the only work of scholarship that examines the literary representation ofTheseus so thoroughly. It brings to life a literary character whose virtues flaws and contradictions belong in no less a degree to his creators the people of Athens. . 1995. 0195089081 . Oxford University Press hardcover

The figments of imagination translated into the communicative sphere as images represent not only external forms but also memories conveyed fears hopes or other emotions. This is especially true as it pertains to religion. But what image of God did the majority of Greeks of the ancient world hold and what were their godly images The book by Peter Eich focuses on the prevailing ideas that religious image production held in Greece as well as on the community-building function of religious images over the course of time. Contemporary testimonies are fully investigated and reinterpreted in their idiom and their contexts of meaning. German text. 1988ref. 37326Routledge. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. First Edition. Hardcover. Dustjacket has minor shelfwear Scholar's name to ffep Bonnie Maclachlan née Ward.; 236 pages; In antiquity a considerable number of books of prophecies went under the general title of "Sibylline Oracles". Rulers as significant as Augustus consulted them in time of danger or crisis for advice and prognoses. Increasing numbers of "ex post facto" prophecies laying a particular interpretation on facts of recent history came to be attributed to one of the mysterious Sibyls. Perhaps the most famous of these is the Cumaean Sibyl who guides the hero in the sixth book of Vergil's "Aeneid" . In fact she was somewhat unusual in her similiarity to other oracular prophetesses such as the Pythia. For where the latter prophesied in response to particular inquirers one of the distinguishing characteristics of Sibyls was that they composed discursive verses for distribution to the world at large. This Professor Parke's last book which was virtually complete on his death in 1986 is an account of a subject both rarely treated in recent decades and difficult to access for all but the most expert. In its pursuit of the sometimes elusive Sibyls it ranges from Heraclitus to Eusebius from Archaic Asia Minor to Christian Rome. This book should be of interest to undergraduates postgraduates and academics of classics. . 1988. 0415003431 . Routledge hardcover
