1903ref. 1220251965DICKINSON E. E. Co. Essex Connecticut. Company Ledger for Dickinson's Witch Hazel Co. 1903–1906. Large folio ledger approx. 20 x 12 in. contemporary half calf over ribbed cloth gilt-lettered spine; marbled endpapers with original Dickinson's Witch Hazel advertising labels. Several hundred pages extensively filled in a neat clerical hand; minor wear to binding internally clean and legible throughout. A substantial early 20th-century business ledger documenting the operations of the E. E. Dickinson Company one of the most prominent American producers of witch hazel extract during a period of established national distribution. Entries record "Cash Received" and "Cash Paid" detailing transactions with druggists wholesalers and regional firms with columns for freight discounts and credit structures offering a clear view of the firm's commercial network and accounting practices. Founded in 1875 by Edward E. Dickinson Sr. building on earlier developments by the Rev. Thomas N. Dickinson the company expanded into the dominant force in the trade at one point supplying a substantial portion of the world's witch hazel. The present volume reflects that scale capturing the routine mechanics of a mature manufacturing enterprise operating within a national market. Retaining original Dickinson's advertising labels the ledger underscores the firm's developed brand identity and provides an unusually vivid and well-preserved record of American pharmaceutical commerce at scale. hardcover

1900ref. 12750Salem Ma: Upton & Frisbee 1900. Albumen photocollage 4 x 5.5 inches on a slightly larger printed studio mount. Minor surface wear and toning. Very good. A wonderful relic of the continuing fascination with the Salem Witch Trials featuring four views of Salem's "Witch House" in a photocollage format produced in Salem around the turn of the 20th century. First built and inhabited by Roger Williams sometime before 1634 the house was later occupied by Jonathan Curwen or Corwin Esquire described here as "one of the judges during the witchcraft trials." The photocollage itself includes four illustrations -- the original house the house following "alterations in 1780" the "rear of the house after 1780" and the house "at the present time." The photograph was produced by Edwin N. Peabody active in Salem from the 1870s to 1890s and published by the local pharmacy Upton & Frisbee which occupied the house beginning in the late-19th century. The verso of the photocollage is printed with detailed information on the "Witch House" mostly encapsulated in eight paragraphs about the "Witchcraft Delusion of 1692" itself. The building was renovated again in 1945 and still stands today as one of the only remaining structures with direct ties to the witch trials. Upton & Frisbee unknown

"An authentic historical narrative, it takes its dialogue from the actual trial records but applies modern psychiatric knowledge to the witchcraft hysteria that swept Salem Village in 1692. It was a tragedy of individuals, which underlined as sharply as has any event in history the power of self-righteousness, fantasy, and fear to turn decent people into fana tical persecutors." OCC 8

Graham Kemp's play chronicling the course of these notorious prosecutions 400 years ago - the second largest witch trial in English history and biggest ever group execution for witchcraft. The Wonderous Discoverie of Witches in the Countie of Lancaster penned by Clerk of the Court Thomas Potts inspired this fascinating script, which delves beneath and beyond the official account to reveal a more complex and compromising human tragedy. 89p. bibliography [ 5 copies found in WorldCat] Book
"When Mary sees her grandmother accused of witchcraft and hanged for the crime, she is silently hurried to safety by an unknown woman. The woman gives her tools to keep the record of her days - paper and ink. Mary is taken to a boat in Plymouth and from there sails to the New World where she hopes to make a new life among the pilgrims. But old superstitions die hard and soon Mary finds that she, like her grandmother, is the victim of ignorance and stupidity, and once more she faces important choices to ensure her survival. With a vividly evoked environment and characters skilfully and patiently drawn, this is a powerful literary achievement by Celia Rees that is utterly engrossing from start to finish." Witch Child won the prestigious Prix Sorcières in France in 2003, and the Di Cento Prize in Italy, 2001. Book
