1983réf. 9369New York: Del Rey 1983. First Illustrated Edition. Original wraps. Near Fine. Lucasfilm. 5 3/8 x 8 1/4 Inches. 213 pages. Original stated First Edition with complete number line to the "1" on the copyright page. Housed in original wraps and illustrated in B/W throughout. Signed by James Kahn directly on the title-page. This book was part of Del-Rey's editions aimed at younger readers and was available at the old 1980's Scholastic Book Fairs. Having purchased one about 1983 at my school I can vouch for the validity of this statement. What a genius. Forty years later and I'm still buying them. Some scuffing to covers and light wear to edges. Spine remains unbroken. NOTE: Having just received this book back from Kahn I find no recorded sales and no active listings for a signed copy of the Illustrated edition. Likely a unique copy as these books are scarce in any condition worthy of getting signed by the author. Kahn is the author of his own New World Series that includes "World Enough and Time" "Time's Dark Laughter" and "Timefall" as well as "The Echo Vector." 80's geeks collectors like me know Kahn as the author of "The Goonies" "Return of the Jedi" "Poltergeist" and "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Del Rey unknown

One leaf a bit creased. First printing of South's second large star catalogue of the distances and positions of double and triple stars."Double stars essentially discovered by Wiiliam Herschel were of great interest throughout the nineteenth century—new ones being found and position measurements made more precise with each improvement in telescope construction. South working with John Herschel during the years 1821–1823. reobserved the double stars charted originally by William Herschel mainly for the purpose of detecting position changes. Their observations helped verify the newly recognized orbital motion of these neighboring stars. Their resulting catalog of 380 double stars presented to the Royal Society in 1824 earned them the gold medal of the Astronomical Society and the grand prize of the Institut de France. For his second catalog of double stars two years later South was awarded the Copley Medal of the Royal Society."DSB. unknown
