1938ref. BB083MOON William 1818–1894: Moon Christmas Annual. 1938. London: Moon Society 1938. Printed in embossed Moon type for the blind a simplified system of embossed reading for the Use of the Blind.Oblong Folio printed throughout with "Moon type" title; 1 85 ff.; publisher's brown cartridge stiff wrappers lettered spine label. The present Christmas Annual for 1938 printed as a gift by the Moon Society includes holiday themed poetry and stories. A most unusual Christmas gift annual. William Moon contracted smallpox as a young child and by age 22 had lost his sight completely. Frustrated by the quality of embossed reading systems he had tried he developed his own system based on roman lettering with portions of the letters omitted in order to make the characters more discernible to the touch. Moon's system was easy to master particularly for those who had learned to read before losing their sight and it became very successful. However nowadays examples are rarely encountered. In -4°, pp. (4), 74, b. A fine original document about the calendar reform.
This very special issue contains two items of major significance. Jack London's prize-winning "What Communities Lose by the Competitive System" appears here for the first time on pages 58-64. This is immediately followed by Part I of "The First Men in the Moon" by H.G. Wells on pages 65-80. pp. [16] ads, 104, [8] plates, [36] ads, [6] cartoons, [10] ads. The dozens and dozens of illustrated ads, some of which are in color, are nothing short of spectacular, our favorite being the four-page two-color glossy illustrated ad for The "Mobile" Company of America, an early and short-lived automaker located on Kingsland Point at Tarrytown-On-The-Hudson, New York. Clean and unmarked with moderate wear. Binding tight. A well-preserved copy of this spectacular issue. Woodbridge, London & Tweney [Enlarged Edition] #909. Book
