"'This Horrid Practice' uncovers an unexplored taboo of New Zealand history - the widespread practice of cannibalism in pre-European Maori society. Until now many historians have tried to avoid it and many Maori have considered it a subject best kept quiet about in public. Paul Moon brings together an impressive array of sources from a variety of disciplines to produce this frequently contentious but always stimulating exploration of how and why Maori ate other human beings and why the practice shuddered to a halt just a few decades after the arrival of Europeans in New Zealand. The book includes a comprehensive survey of cannibalism practices among traditional Maori carefully assessing the evidence and concluding it was widespread. Other chapters look at how explorers and missionaries saw the practice; the role of missionaries and Christianity in its end; and in the final chapter why there has been so much denial on the subject and why some academics still deny that it ever happened." . 2008. 0143006711 . 2006ref. 127Fatal Frontiers A New History of New Zealand in the Decade Before the Treaty By Paul Moon. SCARCE. Publisher: Penguin New Zealand 2006 First Edition. Very good softback minor shelf/edge-wear a little creasing no inscriptions. 256 pages. A fascinating new account of New Zealand in the colourful and pivotal 1830s. Some of the most interesting and important events in New Zealand history took place in the 1830s. In this period the French almost beat the British to claim New Zealand aggressive English merchants were applying pressure on the country's natural resources and growing numbers of European settlers were beginning to demand land. Meanwhile Maori were still heavily in the majority and starting to explore commercial opportunities. But there was turmoil everywhere. Intertribal warfare raged while many tribes were trying to decide how to accommodate the Europeans in their midst. Historian Paul Moon demonstrates it is wrong to regard the 1830s as simply an inevitable lead-up to the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. For those people in New Zealand at the time there was no such certainty. What would happen as the decade closed was far from obvious and as Fatal Frontiers shows this turbulent period deserves consideration in its own right. ALL PHOTOS ARE OF THE ACTUAL BOOK. ref. A9781503642638Hardback. New. Scenes of refugees fleeing Communist countries have created iconic images of the Cold War in Asia. Despite their symbolic prominence the experiences and trajectories of these refugees have remained relatively obscure in Cold War history and global refugee studies. Featuring contributions from Phi-Vân Nguyen Dominic Meng-Hsuan Yang Yumi Moon Ijlal Muzaffar Robert D. Crews Sabauon Nasseri and Aishwary Kumar Cold War Refugees meticulously investigates and connects cases across East Southeast and South Asia. Offering a transnational and trans-imperial perspective this book illuminates the massive mobility of refugee populations across Asia and emphasizes the critical roles of artificial borders displacement and violence in shaping the global Cold War. Drawing from multi-lingual archival sources the authors explore the local regional and global contexts of displacement through five cases: Taiwan Vietnam Korea Afghanistan and Pakistan. They examine the agendas identities and cultures of the refugees who left their homes due to revolutions or wars amid the conflict between the US and the USSR presenting them as historical actors rather than mere subjects of legal governmental or humanitarian discourse. By revisiting key Cold War events in Asia the book provides a critical revision of Cold War history through the lens of refugee experiences and agency. hardcover
