ref. B9780739140451Paperback / softback. New. Narrating Political Reconciliation offers a compelling approach to South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission TRC. It provides a critical theoretical account of how the TRC's reconciliation story came into being and how it shaped and promoted the norms practices and truisms central to the global 'reconciliation industry'. In particular the book examines the material practices and rituals that underpinned the TRC. Claire Moon shows how the TRC narrated apartheid history as a sequence of gross violations of human rights perpetrated with a political objective with the effect of transforming competing politico-moral claims into an 'objective' legal-technical discourse. She also shows how the TRC constructed victims and perpetrators as the key subjects of the new political order through ritual practices of confession testimony forgiveness and healing. Moon argues that the TRC had multiple and divergent effects. Whilst it attempted to secure reconciliation the TRC also generated new social conflicts around questions of justice reparations and apartheid violence: it appeared to redeem those who profited from apartheid but did not directly perpetrate atrocities; it left unacknowledged the everyday suffering of thousands; it left undisturbed structures of material inequality within which political violence was made possible. Overall Moon provides a unique approach to reconciliation and transitional justice in post-conflict and democratizing states and this book serves as a challenging critical analysis of the field for students and scholars alike. paperback

Subjects and Citizens reveals the many ways in which a wide range of canonical and non-canonical writing contends with the most crucial social political and literary issues of our past and present. Defining the landscape of the New American literary history these essays are united by three interrelated concerns: ideas of origin where does "American literature" begin ideas of nation what does "American literature" mean and ideas of race and gender what does "American literature" include and exclude and how. Work by writers as diverse as Aphra Behn James Fenimore Cooper Edgar Allan Poe Frances Harper Harriet Beecher Stowe Herman Melville William Faulkner Harriet Jacobs Frederick Douglass Abraham Lincoln Bharati Mukherjee Booker T. Washington Mark Twain Kate Chopin Americo Paredes and Toni Morrison are discussed from several theoretical perspectives using a variety of methodologies. Issues of the "frontier" and the "border" as well as those of coloniality and postcoloniality are explored. In each case these essays emphasize the ideological nature of national identity and more specifically the centrality of race and gender to our concept of nationhood. Collected from recent issues of American Literature with three new essays added Subjects and Citizens charts the new directions being taken in American literary studies. Contributors. As the official architects of Napoleon Charles Percier 1764-1838 and Pierre-Francois-Leonard Fontaine 1762-1853 designed interiors that responded to the radical ideologies and collective forms of destruction that took place during the French Revolution. The architects visualized new forms of imperial sovereignty by inverting the symbols of monarchy and revolution constructing meeting rooms resembling military encampments and gilded thrones that replaced the Bourbon lily with Napoleonic bees. Yet in the wake of political struggle each foundation stone that the architects laid for the new imperial regime was accompanied by an awareness of the contingent nature of sovereign power. Contributing fresh perspectives on the architecture decorative arts and visual culture of revolutionary France this book explores how Percier and Fontaine's desire to build structures of permanence and their inadvertent reliance upon temporary architectural forms shaped a new awareness of time memory and modern political identity in France. paperback
