In the first decades of adulthood he wrote a 15145-page fictional epic In the Realms of the Unreal. He spent much of the rest of his long life illustrating it in astonishing drawings and watercolors. In Darger's unfolding saga pastoral utopias are repeatedly savaged by extreme violence directed at children particularly girls. Given his disturbing subject matter and the extreme solitude he maintained throughout his life critics have characterized Darger as eccentric deranged and even dangerous as an outsider artist compelled to create a fantasy universe. Contesting such pathologizing interpretations Michael Moon looks to Darger's resources to the narratives and materials that inspired him and often found their way into his writing drawings and paintings. Moon finds an artist who reveled in the burgeoning popular culture of the early twentieth century in its newspaper comic strips pulp fiction illustrated children's books and mass-produced religious art. Moon contends that Darger's work deserves and rewards comparison with that of contemporaries of his such as the "pulp historians" H. P. Lovecraft and Robert Howard the Oz chronicler L. Frank Baum and the newspaper cartoonist Bud Fisher. . 2012. 0822351420 . Duke University Press Books hardcover

Description: "The most highly publicized building renewal process in the world today-and the most significant survey of competing architecture designs since the international design competition for the Chicago Tribune Tower in 1922-is for the reconstruction of the World Trade Center in lower Manhattan. It has inspired a multitude of designs and has engaged architects on a global scale in the re-imagining of the vacant 16-acre site. Published in conjunction with Architectural Record the most important architecture journal in the United States 'Imagining Ground Zero' documents not only the various competitions sponsored by the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation but also the informal proposals sponsored by the New York Times New York Magazine and the exhibition at Max Protetch Gallery as well as a selection from thousands of schemes submitted independently for the World Trade Center site and Memorial. Among the key figures in contemporary architecture whose work is featured here are Coop Himmelblau Peter Eisenman Norman Foster Charles Gwathmey Zaha Hadid Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer Associates Steven Holl Rem Koolhaas Greg Lynn Richard Meier Eric Owen Moss David Rockwell Lindy Roy Ben van Berkel and Caroline Bos Rafael Viñoly and many others. With its exhaustive approach to these myriad voices in the discourse surrounding the World Trade Center site 'Imagining Ground Zero' is destined to become the canonical reference for this unprecedented event in world architecture." -- with a bonus offer--; Architectural Record Book . 2004. 0847826570 . 1968réf. 1505401968. Original album of this iconic work boldly signed by legendary musician Pete Townshend on the front panel. In very good condition. Record is included. Magic Bus: The Who on Tour is a 1968 compilation album by the British rock band The Who released exclusively in the United States by Decca Records. Despite the title’s implication of a live performance the album does not feature concert recordings; rather it assembles previously released studio tracks from earlier albums and singles such as “Run Run Run” “Doctor Doctor” and the hit single “Magic Bus.” Issued to capitalize on the commercial momentum generated by the success of that single the compilation served as a marketing strategy to sustain The Who’s growing popularity in the American market. While not considered part of the band’s core discography by the members themselves Magic Bus: The Who on Tour remains an interesting artifact of late-1960s rock culture and the record industry’s efforts to package and promote British Invasion artists to a transatlantic audience. unknown

réf. H6404Hardcover. Very Good. All housed in handsome folding blue cloth box. From the estate of Irwin's two first cousins Olive Irwin and Edith Irwin Baum both long-term employees at Gulf Oil. Irwin served as the Lunar Module pilot for Apollo 15 1971 4th manned moon landing and was the eighth person to ever walk on the moon -- and the only one from Pittsburgh. After a controversy regarding the sale of First Day Covers hand-canceled during the flight he and two other crew members resigned from NASA after being officially reprimanded. He then became ordained as a Baptist minister and established a faith-based organization called the High Flight Foundation with headquarters in Colorado Springs. Later in life he became convinced that with aerial surveillance he could locate the remains of Noah's Ark on Mt. Ararat and made several trips to Turkey to continue his search. Both Olive and Edith went to Cape Canaveral to witness the July 1971 Apollo 15 takeoff and retained lots of publications and ephemera from their time there. 1 AUTOGRAPHED MATERIAL: Letter to Edith from Irwin dated April 11 1979 on local topics and support for his Uplift program signed "Love from Beyond the Earth Jim." Program from the irish Genealogical Association 1983 hosting of Irwin's talk "Footprints on the Moon" inscribed to Olive. And a typed 1 page Christmas letter from 1978 from Jim Irwin's mother Elsie to Edith and her husband. 2 PHOTOS: Eight original snapshots of the takeoff with the negatives and the original envelope; two small b&w studio shots of Jim Irwin; three original color photos -- Jim with Edith and Olive Jim with his wife; and Jim with his mother Edith and Olive.
