1949ref. 188141949. Moon Bucklin. The Darker Brother 1949 brought Moon's 1943 novel of a Black Florida family's migration to Harlem into the postwar mass-market paperback trade centering the racial discrimination Ben encounters after moving North. The novel follows Ben from Florida to Harlem where expectations of greater freedom confront housing employment and interpersonal racism; his later military service returns him to the segregated South. Published originally during World War II the narrative placed these experiences within the movement of African Americans from the South to northern cities and the persistence of racial discrimination beyond the Jim Crow South. Moon Bucklin. The Darker Brother. New York City: Bantam Books November 1949. Bantam edition. First paperback printing. 246 pp. Original pictorial wrappers. 8vo. No dust jacket as issued. The front wrapper depicts Ben and his fiancée Birdie on a Harlem street confronted by a white man clutching papers with buildings and street activity visible behind them. Red blue and gold dominate the illustration. Across the upper margin appears the publisher's line "He came up North for freedom and got---Harlem!" The rear wrapper announces "Born the Wrong Color" in red lettering and summarizes Ben's experiences of racial prejudice. The cover's language and confrontation scene recast Moon's novel for the postwar paperback market by emphasizing racial conflict as its principal selling point. First published by Doubleday Doran in 1943 The Darker Brother follows Ben his mother and sister from Florida to Harlem and traces the consequences of racial violence and discrimination as Ben searches for work plans a future with Birdie and enters military service. Contemporary reviews recognized race relations as the novel's central subject while Moon continued addressing racial discrimination in A Primer for White Folks 1945 and The High Cost of Prejudice 1947. The 1949 Bantam edition is particularly revealing for the history of African American representation in popular publishing: its wrapper converts a novel about Black migration and racism into the visual and promotional vocabulary of the mid-century paperback juxtaposing the promise of northern freedom with the publisher's stark Harlem street scene. Minor creasing to the lower right corner of the front wrapper and minor chipping to the spine neither affecting text or illustration; internally clean and overall very good condition. unknown books

1971ref. 167739Beverly Hills CA: United Artists 1971. Vintage reference photograph from the 1971 "surrealist documentary" rock film showing Frank Zappa. In 1970 Zappa completely re-formed the Mothers of Invention to include drummer Aynsley Dunber jazz keyboardist George Duke and three members of The Turtles. Zappa began to write a film for the new lineup and recorded "Chunga's Revenge" 1970 with them as a "preview." Subsequently Zappa met conductor Zubin Mehta and worked with him to produce a concert in May 1970 wherein the Los Angeles Philharmonic was augmented by the Mothers or vice versa as you like and referred to this as "the second preview." The film itself shot in a week at Pinewood Studios outside London was a tripped-out documentary about life as a musician on the road and Zappa characteristically chose an eclectic group of celebrities to join the proceedings including Theodore Bikel Ringo Starr and Keith Moon. The resulting soundtrack is a matter of debate among Zappa enthusiasts but is notable for its orchestral finale "Strictly Genteel" a touchstone for the variety of classical music experimentations Zappa would subsequently pursue. 8 x 10 inches.
