Gyel par Gustave Geley (1868-1924), médecin français qui deviendra l'une des figures importantes de la métapsychique et dirigera l'Institut métapsychique international à Paris. Dans cet essai, Geley entreprend une synthèse des doctrines spirites et des phénomènes présentés par leurs défenseurs comme expérimentaux, à une époque où le spiritisme suscite un vif intérêt dans les milieux intellectuels, philosophiques et scientifiques européens. L'ouvrage examine notamment la doctrine spirite, les phénomènes médiumniques et leurs interprétations, les rapports entre l'âme et le corps, la réincarnation, l'évolution de la conscience et les conséquences philosophiques et sociales du spiritisme. L'auteur cherche à rapprocher les doctrines spiritualistes des conceptions évolutionnistes et des recherches psychologiques contemporaines, illustrant les tentatives de certains médecins et chercheurs de la Belle Époque pour soumettre les phénomènes dits paranormaux à une investigation scientifique.
