All page edges gilt 32pp. VG. "David Bogue started life on 16 October 1808 in East Lothian as the son of Jacob Bogue a farmer and Ann Johnston. According to the Oxford Dictionary of Biography he became the assistant of Thomas Ireland a bookseller in Edinburgh but moved to London in 1836 to work for Charles Tilt. Tilt had his shop at 86 Fleet Street and specialised in illustrated books and lithographic prints. The 1851 census found the Bogue family at 76 Camden Road. The census papers for 86 Fleet Street tell us that no person sleeps on premises. David died in November 1856 of heart disease aged just 48.2 His name still appeared in the tax records and in imprints in 1857 and 1858 as the executors tried to keep the place going with the help of Charles Tilt but by 1859 most of Bogues copyrights and stock as well as the shop had been taken over by William Kent his name is listed in the Land Tax records for 1860." - See David Bogue bookseller and publisher by Baldwin Hamey 2017. 'Mr Westmacott the sculptor Richard Westmacott the younger' has called on him and he has 'shown him the settlement all down my Wall - I told him that you had seen it but did not contemplate any immediate danger - he said that Mr Valpy Henry Valpy fl.1851-1885 of the architects Burrell & Valpy was out of town'. Westmacott will write to Valpy as he thinks there ought to be 'a conference with' Lakyn who 'should be requested to make a report'. The 'suggestion' Newton has made 'as to the Iron ties will be indispensable - & furthermore that the East wall near door to me should be rebuilt - as it must have weakened the North East angle'. The 'wall of Mr Slades house' has fallen down 'with a tremendous crash - while they were digging for the underpinning' according to the Survey of London Stephen Slade lived at 8 Argyle Street from 1819 to 1864. From what Newton sees 'as to a preparation for a Wall' he fears that the builders 'intend to come beyond the opening of my light'. Asks Lakyn to 'look in' if he 'should be coming this way'. Newton moved from 6 Argyle Street where he had lived since 1820 in 1866. 19 October 1864; 6 Argyle Street, London. unknown

réf. 22106'Friday Evg'. No place or date. 4pp 16mo. Bifolium on light-green paper. In good condition lightly aged. The letter begins: 'My Dear Miss de Witte Of course I found the Yankee Poems directly after You were Gone – too carefully put by. Do not put mine away too carefully – as I want You to really read them. Poetry of France The sad lines of Marguerite d'Ecosse in the notes at the end are original & perhaps will stroke You – as the mournful Subject did me. The lines have been translated into German French &c.' The news of the family the de Witte named has made her 'heart ache' and as Costello is sure she and her 'kind Mamma do something to help them' she asks her to 'let them have the enclosed trifle. It is nothing but being unexpected and sure to be useful in some way may be acceptable'. She asks her to 'say nothing about it to any one – as it is of no Consequence and I coul dnot offer it except with other Contributions'. She will 'look for the Scandinavian poetry & may find it. Longfellow gives some in his Poets of Europe'. She ends in hopes of hearing 'better news of colds &c'. 'Friday Evg'. No place or date. unknown

1840réf. 673Philadelphia Pa. 1840. Calling Card printed one side only. 40 x 75 mm. 1 ½ x 3 inches. Painter's name scratched out and "Miss Louise Bradley West Springfield" is penciled in Engraved border pinholes. James W. Williams was a miniature portrait painter. He also experimented with early photographic processes to produce his portraits. He was born in England about 1787 and set up shop in Philadelphia. The Smithsonian holds two of his works; a Talbotype paper print with applied color of Edward Robinson Squibb and an ivory type of two girls untitled. Ivory types were positive photographic prints resembling a hand-painted ivory miniature and were first produced in the mid-1850s. As the term suggests some of these images were made on thin sheets of actual ivory or artificial ivory made of pigmented and hardened gelatin. Louise Bradley 1818-aft 1880 of West Springfield Massachusetts acquired Williams's calling card and used it as her own in this instance since she crossed out his name and penciled in her own. She married a farmer Charles White and lived and died in West Springfield. Portrait miniatures began to flourish in 16th century Europe and the art was practiced during the 17th century and 18th century but the development of photography contributed to the decline in the popularity of miniatures. . unknown
