"Lord Strathcona's Horse Royal Canadians" stitched onto the front while the horses are equipped with gymnastic-style saddlery. A 7.5 x 9.75 inch wide photograph titled in negative "Lord Strathcona's Horse - Horse Show Regina April 23 1914." mounted onto a 11.75 x13.5 inches wide photographer's commercial mount with "The Carbon Studio / Ry. St. Regina" stamped at lower right. Photo w. some fading light soil and marks ; card mount w. pin holes at corners glue repair to upper corner and name penciled on verso "Pvt. Green" A proud and capable looking team of professional riders. "Cowboys were called upon again in 1899 when Britain and thus Canada became involved in the Boer War. The Boers or Afrikaners were a unique type type of enemy – an army of prairie veldt ranchers who fought guerrilla-style on horseback. Their logical counterparts were Canada's mounted police and cowboys and in 1900 Donald Smith better known as Lord Strathcona raised a mounted company of 400 men from western Canada half from the NWMP and half from the horse and cattle ranches.
