1870rif. 194090Pennsylvania: Nyemetz Photography Studio 1870. Hardback. Date is suggested. A fine period example; padded rich-ruby velvet over thick bevelled boards. Ornate silver close-clasp with silver studs to the corners of the back panel. White silk doublure. Generalized wear to the extremities with a closed tear to 1 side of the spine. Remains uncommonly well-preserved. ; 8vo 8"" - 9"" tall; Many have the original tissue-guards still intact. All but 1 seem to have been produced at the Nymetz studio and printed on stiff card. 1 was produced at the H.A Clapham studio in Swansea England likely a close relative with 2 young children of the main Pennsylvania family. 1 further postcard portrait was produced at the Dittrich studio Atlantic City N.J. again likely to be a relative. 1942rif. WALTER-FILM006912New York: Ivan Black New Color Studio 1942-1945. Set of three vintage original 8 x 10" 20 x 25 cm. black-and-white print still photos. Date stamps agency information and paper blurbs attached to two photos. Minor wear with one showing wrinkling at top and bottom blank white margins. Overall near fine. These portraits including one of Hazel Scott at the piano capture her effervescent sassy and charismatic personality which made her a top favorite for radio film and -- what one of the image's attached paper blurb indicates -- star of Café Society Uptown. She performed as the resident pianist/vocalist for five years by 1945 and earned a place at the top of show biz. Originally from Trinidad and Tobago Scott moved to the US and was a child prodigy. The classic and jazz musician became one of America's premier pianists of her time. The front cover is an original woodblock by Toshi Yoshida the rear cover features a color woodblock by Hodaka Yoshida. A Very Good copy in the original cream wraps spine has some wear and separation at top; covers have some browning; rust from staples shows through to cover. This catalog records the tour of the Yoshida family studio at an important transitional time between generations and styles with Toshi's work evolving from the traditional as examplified by his father Hiroshi to find his own forms and Hodaka charting his own choice from the start. 13 p. 1 leaf of plates : ill. b/w ports. ; 24 cm. Spine with raised bands each with gilt piping. Compartments double ruled lettered and decorated in gilt. White vellum inlay on the front cover incorporated into a gilt reproduction of the well known original design used on the cloth bound copies of this volume within a double ruled border edge. Rear board with gilt double ruled line border. Gilt inner dentelles. Silk endpapers. All edges gilt. The binding is unsigned but is certainly the work of a master bookbinder.
