1887réf. 1591887. Albumen print; 6 1/2 x 4 inches; With photographer's credit mount recto and Haskell's identification in ink mount recto. An extremely are photograph showing Burnette Haskell a radical California labor organizer alongside James J. Callahan taken in 1887 when both men were working as editors for the Denver newspaper "The Labor Enquirer." Haskell is seated on the left side of the photo. According to the Library of Congress the Labor Enquirer was first printed in 1882 and was "unapologetically socialist." Callahan took over in 1887 and was joined by Burnette later that year. As the L.O.C. writes "Callahan was joined by Burnette G. Haskell who served as the resident editor for about six months. Haskell was formerly associated with 'The Truth' published in San Francisco. Under Haskell's editorship the paper fell afoul of the Knights of Labor who had once championed the Enquirer leading to an all-out boycott of the paper. Haskell returned to California where he began The Kaweah Colony a utopian socialist community located in the Sierra Nevadas. Haskell and his followers lived in the woods under a grove of giant Sequoias including one they named "Karl Marx." The colony officially disbanded in 1892. Deaccessioned from the Bancroft Library thence to the estate of Ron Lerch. unknown
1970réf. 16443JCulver City: Metro-Golwyn-Mayer Studios 1970s. The original "Myrna Loy Building" metal sign from the M.G.M. Hollywood Studio lot. In the 1970s the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studio started naming various buildings after their classic film stars. Myrna Loy was alive and well at the time of the naming of her building. This sign was acquired by a gentleman who worked as a carpenter on the lot for many years. His accompanying letter reads: During the middle 1980's 85 to 89 I Michael McGovern worked at the old M.G.M. lot Studios in Culver City California in the Permanent Construction Dept. The lot was sold several times in this time frame. At one point before the now Sony Studios it was owned and named Lorimar Telepictues. When the lot was Lorimar Telepictures they were painting and changing the M.G.M. lot to the new Lorimar "look." Thus the signs Blue and Gold naming the building after the old M.G.M. stars were taken down and replaced with the new signs brown and white that matched the Lorimar colors. I asked my boss if it was OK to keep the signs I changed and he said it was fine with him. Myrna Loy is best known for her portrayal of "Nora Charles" in six Thin Man films with William Powell of the 1930s but also starred in Manhattan Melodrama Libeled Lady Test Pilot The Best Years of our Lives Cheaper by the Dozen and From the Terrace. Her film career spanned more than 50 years Accompanied by a copy of Mr. McGovern's "Prop Maker" ID card. The sign measures 18 1/2 x 8 1/4 inches and presents with some obvious wear from the elements like extremely small areas of rust and signs of use overall in excellent condition. Today the studio lot is owned by Sony and it houses both Sony Pictures and Columbia Pictures. The Myrna Loy Building which was the old MGM sound department exists and it still proudly bears her name. They documented major landmarks like the Eiffel Tower and designed interiors for designers like Jean-Michel Frank offering a glimpse into 20th-century Parisian life. Oblong Folio 12.5" x 15.5" contemporary pictorial black lacquered boards inlaid in relief with bone containing fifty hand-colored albumen photographs measuring generally 7.75 " x 10" mounted recto and verso to 25 thick card leaves with tissue guards interleaved. Forty-four of the images are titled in the negative. Binding worn: spine perished boards and front free endpapers detached boards remarkably well preserved although lacking one small inlaid piece most tissue guards creased and torn mounts with slight wave and sporadic foxing/ soiling 3 photos with minute losses at the edges a few slightly faded or under exposed most fresh and rich in tonal quality. Although quite probably a composite album representing photos from different studios certainly many of the images are from the Yokohama studio of T. Enami.
