1920réf. 240221920. Portrait album of a young woman believed to have been visually impaired tentatively identified as Alice Erdman. The sitter appears alone in all nine photographs her gaze fixed and directed beyond or away from the camera. These formal studio portraits of the early 1920s offer a visual record of a blind woman whose life remains only partly documented. Eugene newspapers also document Alice Erdman's musical performances and prize-winning embroidery providing a possible connection between the sitter and a woman active in the local community. Album containing nine original gelatin silver photographs each approximately 6.5 x 4.5 inches mounted one per page on patterned brown cardstock leaves with silver-colored borders and corner mounts. Original gray cord-bound paperboard covers; album measures 10 x 6.25 inches. One photograph shows the sitter seated in an elaborately carved chair while another depicts her standing in profile holding a closed umbrella. Two further portraits show her in a light-colored satin dress beside the same studio furnishings. Her bobbed hair and loosely fitted dresses reflect the changing silhouettes of the early 1920s while glossy elbow-length gloves and pearls retain the formality of earlier portrait conventions. The album offers an opportunity to examine disability history through the photographic record of a young blind or visually impaired woman. Her fixed gaze solitary presentation and carefully arranged poses are visible features of the portraits though the photographs alone cannot establish the nature or extent of her visual impairment. The sitter's identification as Alice Erdman remains tentative. Elizabeth Erdman Romane a professional woman photographer apprenticed under Eugene Oregon photographer Sue Dorris and acquired her own studio in 1918 maintaining an independent photographic business for decades. She moved from Minnesota to Lane County Oregon in 1909 with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Albert Erdman and her sister Alice Erdman. She later married Harry Romane and spent more than 50 years living and working in the Lane County area. Operating under the name Romane Studio she became one of Eugene's most prolific photographers from the 1920s through the 1950s managing her business at multiple locations along downtown Willamette Street. Her portraiture earned national and international awards. Although the family connection makes Romane a relevant figure in the album's history the photographer of these particular portraits has not been established. Minor fading and cover wear; overall very good condition. unknown books
1930réf. 158866New York: Vandamm Studio 1930. Vintage portrait photograph of actor Otto Kruger by the photography team of Florence and Tommy Vandamm Vandamm Studio circa 1930. The photograph was likely commissioned by the Theatre Guild which contracted Vandamm Studios to photograph all of their productions beginning in 1928. Kruger began his career as a Broadway matinee idol in the 1920s and 1930s before establishing a niche in feature films as the charming villain such as in Alfred Hitchcock's 1942 film "Saboteur" Joseph M. Newman's "711 Ocean Drive" and Douglas Sirk's 1954 film "Magnificent Obsession." Kruger starred in over 80 films between 1915 and 1964 as well as multiple television appearances in the 1950s and 1960s. The husband and wife photography team of Florence and Tommy Vandamm married in 1918 emigrated from London to New York in the 1920s due to declining business in their portrait studio following World War I. By 1928 Vandamm Studio began to dominate the field in New York after being contracted by the Theatre Guild to photograph all of their productions. Florence took responsibility for most of the portrait work while Tommy documented the stage work. The studio was closed by Florence in 1961. Illustrated throughout with black & white photographs. From Introduction: Welcome to Leelanu “Land of Delight.” Leelanau County the Little Finger of Michigan is a triangular peninsula extending northwest into the fresh blue waters of Lake Michigan. Located half way between the Equator and the North Pole and wept by the clean water-washed air Leelanau is the year-round haven for living. The land is primitive in its wooded beauty but with well-kept farmlands adding a delightful pastoral touch. Nearby metropolitan areas are easily accessible. Leelanau is an Indian name meaning “Land of Delight” and from the earliest days of its settlement by lumbermen fishermen and farmers to the days when city folk discovered its healthful restful climate the country has proved in numerous ways that it truly is the “Land of Delight.” The Studio, n.d. unknown books
1910réf. BK0065Philadelphia: Murdock Studios 1910. Real photo postcard portrait 3 ½ x 5 ½ inches. Studio stamp verso reading "Murdock Studio / 4047 Market St. / Philadelphia Pa. / Extra Copies of this Photo can be had at any time. Excellent contrast light wear Near Fine. A particularly attractive studio portrait of an unidentified African American man dressed in a three-piece suit and tie and seated next to a small table with flowers. The photographer Murdock Studio has proven difficult to trace though the address on the verso places the studio at 4047 Market Street near 40th Street in West Philadelphia. The location is interesting in relation to the development of the Black Bottom the predominantly African American neighborhood which extended roughly from 33rd to 40th Streets around the Market Street corridor. The neighborhood grew during the first half of the twentieth century before being largely destroyed during urban renewal in the 1960s. We have not been able to determine whether Murdock Studio was Black-owned or to identify the sitter. A strong example of African American studio portraiture from West Philadelphia during the period. 1890réf. 54541Constantinople: Sebah & Joaillier 1890. First edition. Hardcover. vg- to vg. Oblong small folio. 12 1/4 x 14 1/4". Red pebbled cloth boards with decorative gilt ruling tooling and lettering on the covers. Rebacked maroon leather spine. Gilt-stamped crescent moon and star motif the national emblem of Turkey on the back cover. Taken from the Galata Tower in what is now the Karaköy neighborhood of Istanbul this magnificent panorama displays the skyline and cityscape of Constantinople as it appeared sometime in the late 1880s or early 1890s. The panorama is comprised of 10 original albumen photographs mounted on heavy card stock and bound together in accordion style leporello measuring a total of more then 11 feet when completely unfolded. Shot in a southwardly direction the viewer can see Galata Karaköy in the foreground and from left to right across the Bosporus to the Uskudar district on the Asian side and then across the harbor at the mouth of the Golden Horn the Galata Bridge and across to the Pérama neighborhood and the Faith district where many famous landmarks of the city can be seen including the New Mosque Topkapi Palace Hagia Sophia and many others. Each panel measures about 13" wide and 12" tall. The photography is credited to "Sebah & Joaillier" one of the most prominent and prolific photography studios of Ottoman Empire during the second half of 19th century. Originally founded sometime around 1857 in Instanbul by Syrian-Armenian photographer Pascal Sebah 1823-1886 the studio was one of the earliest in the city and all of Ottoman Turkey. By the 1870s Sebah had become among the most prominent Ottoman photographers having also opened a branch of the studio in Cairo. Upon Sebah's death in 1888 the firm was taken over by his 16 year-old son Jean Pascal Sebah who then partnered with photographer Policarpe Joaillier 1848-1904. The firm was renamed "Sebah & Joaillier". Therefore although this panorama is undated it could not have been issued earlier than 1888; most likely sometime shortly thereafter circa 1890. Spine of of the portfolio has been professionally re-backed. Plates with minor to light foxing although the images are still quite clean and vibrant. Binding in very good images in very good- to very good condition overall. A slightly later version of the panorama from Sebah & Joaillier simply titled "Constantinople" is comprised of 12 slightly smaller panels instead of 10 and measures around the same size in total.
