Best.-Nr. A9780295747729Paperback / softback. New. As the audacious Monkey King battles his way through a landscape of inexplicable places and unfamiliar passions Further Adventures on the Journey to the West offers a wry revisionist critique of the late-Ming fascination with desire. Building on the great sixteenth-century novel Journey to the West which recounts the escapades of a monk and three companions traveling to India in search of Buddhist scriptures to carry back to China this sequel is a parable of self-delusion that explores the tension between desire and emptiness from a Buddhist perspective. The consummate literati novel written by an accomplished artist for a well-educated readership it is filled with allusions and parodies and features a dream-sequence narrative that is innovative and sophisticated even by modern standards. This new fully annotated translation by two acclaimed scholars and translators brings to life this remarkably inventive playful early modern text. The volume includes the original commentaries and illustrations a critical introduction and afterword and notes that highlight the sources of the novel’s intertextual references revealing the author’s erudition and versatility. paperback

"The Rivals comedy in five acts by Richard Brinsley Sheridan produced and published in 1775. The original play stars Sir Anthony Absolute fictional character the father of Captain Jack Absolute and with him a protagonist of Richard Brinsley Sheridan's comic play The Rivals 1775. Sir Anthony is a wealthy aristocrat and so his son masquerades as the penniless Ensign Beverley in order to court Lydia Languish who has romantic notions of marrying a poor man. 1911Best.-Nr. 216131911. Very Good Minus. The 1911 comedy of manners has a mother and daughter scheming to snag a rich husband with the daughter pretending to be an English aristocrat with great effect until a man comes along threatening to expose her. In the two large photos both 25 by 32 cm not counting margins we see Mrs. Fiske and her mother in the work played by Florine Arnold who was a frequent supporting player in Mrs. Fiske's productions. The margins of the photos are chipped and soiled. None of this intrudes on the photo images. One can see minor crack lines in the photos and these are fairly minor demerits. The photos remain sharp with only a touch of fading despite their age. unknown
