1920réf. 240221920. Portrait album of a young woman believed to have been visually impaired tentatively identified as Alice Erdman. The sitter appears alone in all nine photographs her gaze fixed and directed beyond or away from the camera. These formal studio portraits of the early 1920s offer a visual record of a blind woman whose life remains only partly documented. Eugene newspapers also document Alice Erdman's musical performances and prize-winning embroidery providing a possible connection between the sitter and a woman active in the local community. Album containing nine original gelatin silver photographs each approximately 6.5 x 4.5 inches mounted one per page on patterned brown cardstock leaves with silver-colored borders and corner mounts. Original gray cord-bound paperboard covers; album measures 10 x 6.25 inches. One photograph shows the sitter seated in an elaborately carved chair while another depicts her standing in profile holding a closed umbrella. Two further portraits show her in a light-colored satin dress beside the same studio furnishings. Her bobbed hair and loosely fitted dresses reflect the changing silhouettes of the early 1920s while glossy elbow-length gloves and pearls retain the formality of earlier portrait conventions. The album offers an opportunity to examine disability history through the photographic record of a young blind or visually impaired woman. Her fixed gaze solitary presentation and carefully arranged poses are visible features of the portraits though the photographs alone cannot establish the nature or extent of her visual impairment. The sitter's identification as Alice Erdman remains tentative. Elizabeth Erdman Romane a professional woman photographer apprenticed under Eugene Oregon photographer Sue Dorris and acquired her own studio in 1918 maintaining an independent photographic business for decades. She moved from Minnesota to Lane County Oregon in 1909 with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Albert Erdman and her sister Alice Erdman. She later married Harry Romane and spent more than 50 years living and working in the Lane County area. Operating under the name Romane Studio she became one of Eugene's most prolific photographers from the 1920s through the 1950s managing her business at multiple locations along downtown Willamette Street. Her portraiture earned national and international awards. Although the family connection makes Romane a relevant figure in the album's history the photographer of these particular portraits has not been established. Minor fading and cover wear; overall very good condition. unknown

réf. 100987Canton circa 1830-1870. . 4to album 33 x 26 cm; 24 bodycolours on pith paper each 30.5 x 20.4 cm all mounted on paper and framed with a pale blue silk fabric border bookplate 3 plates with small marginal tears; bound in contemporary patterned decorated silk boards a touch rubbed but overall bright and attractive. An excellent example of a rare Chinese album of paintings revealing the tea production process in detail. Attributed to the studio or circle of Sunqua fl.18301870 the present album contains fine examples of pith paper paintings produced in China most often Canton for export to the Western market. The technique of bodycolour on pith produces a semi-translucent effect unattainable using Western methods and entranced the Western world in the nineteenth century. The subjects of these 'trade' albums were chosen to appeal to Europeans evoking a sense of the 'Orient' to those that had not travelled to China meaning often the paintings were of Chinese flora and fauna or costumes. The subject of tea production as here was less common but perhaps more effectively evoked the connection between China and the West as the viewer sees the full process of the creation of a product which they would have had in their tea cups at home complete with the painting and shipping of the crates which arrived in European ports. Canton as the only Chinese port permitted to trade with the West from 1757-1842 became the centre of pith painting in the 1830s and 40s. Studios such as that of Sunqua flourished with a combination of artistic skill and efficient production that allowed them to meet the demand from the Western market. Sunqua himself was labelled the 'Chinese Hogarth' by Charles Toogood Downing in his work The Fan-qui in China for his impressive artistic skill in both oil and bodycolour. The trade suffered during the First Opium War 1839-41 when a number of the studios in Canton harbour were burned and then a fire in 1856 destroyed most of what was left. The impact of the pith paper painting trade was impressive considering it thrived in such a relatively small time period and the continued presence of the paintings in European institutions testifies to their enduring appeal both visually and historically. There are collections of paintings on pith in the Ashmolean the British Museum the Fitzwilliam the Hermitage the Library of Congress the Peabody/Essex Museum in Massachusetts and the Hong Kong Museum of Art. [Canton, circa 1830-1870]. hardcover

A handsome period album of Scottish topographical photography produced by the celebrated Dundee firm Valentine & Sons one of the three major Scottish commercial studios of the 19th century. Among the views are: Holyrood from Calton Hill Edinburgh Castle and National Gallery Princes Street with Scott Monument Stirling Castle Ben Lomond Forth Bridge Trossachs Pier and Steamer Images are captioned in the negative characteristic of Valentine's production for the middle- and upper-class tourist market. These albums were sold through stationers railway bookstalls and hotels and represent an early commercial system of curated regional photography prior to the postcard era. A well-preserved example of a classic Scottish photographic souvenir volume notable for its strong tonal range and consistent print quality. A 19th-century album of twelve Valentine & Sons albumen views of Scotland including Edinburgh Castle Holyrood the Forth Bridge and the Trossachs-classic compositions by one of Britain's great commercial studios. James Valentine-along with G. W. Wilson-was a foundational figure in Scottish commercial photography; his Dundee studio shaped public visual culture and later became one of the world's major postcard producers. His Dundee studio systematized the photographic depiction of Scottish landscape architecture and tourism shaping how Scotland was visually imagined in the late 19th century. Valentine & Sons helped create the commercial model of curated regional imagery-albums views and series sold through railways hotels and stationers. The firm later became one of the world's major postcard producers meaning these albumen prints represent the pre-postcard phase of mass photographic culture. These views are not isolated artworks but part of an early visual infrastructure of tourism and national identity. Subjects: Albumen Prints; Valentine Studio; Scottish Topography; Tourism History; Architecture Photography; Travel & Landscape; Scottish History; 19th-Century Visual Culture. unknown
