As Lieutenant Uhura communications officer of the Starship Enterprise she was the first African-American woman to have a major continuing role on television. Her candid and insightful autobiography takes readers on her life's voyage of personal discovery and professional triumph - beyond Uhura. Granddaughter of the rebellious son of a slave owner Nichols grew up in a socially progressive family. By the age of sixteen the young singer-dancer had already been praised by Josephine Baker and had worked with Duke Ellington. With tenacity and talent she established herself as a first-rate performer in nightclubs onstage and eventually in film. From the beginning of her Hollywood career some would sayshe had two strikes against her:she was Black and she was a woman. In the face of racism a brush with the mob and an attempted rape she fought courageously against the injustices that stood between her and her dreams. Through an early job on television - years before Star Trek - Nichols met Gene Rodenberry. Describing her pivotal role in the Star Trek universe she takes readers where no book has gone before; into the heart and mind of this man the series' creator for a time her lover and afterward her friend. She also reveals the true story behind the scenes with the Star Trek family and details the evolution of the Trekker phenomenon with humour affection and respect. A symbol of hope and promise for millions of viewers Nichols continues to work toward the same goals Lieutenant Uhura and indeed all of Star Trek embody. Whether spearheading a national recruitment drive to bring minorities and women into the NASA astronaut corps or producing space-oriented educational films and programs for young people Nichols remains devoted to inspiring a sense of wonder and promise for human-kind's real-life future among the stars. Her autobiography is a moving testament to the indomitability of the human spirit. 1929ref. BK0177Sacramento California: Sutter Club 1929. Large typographic broadside 35 x 12 inches printed in black with several small illustrations. Blank verso. Original folds otherwise near fine. A large and striking broadside advertising a private minstrel and vaudeville performance at Sacramento's Sutter Club given in honor of California state officers and members of the legislature. The entertainment was scheduled for Thursday February 21 at nine o'clock with admission restricted to invited guests. The broadside promises an elaborate evening of entertainment: "Startling Stunts by Strenuous Stars Mirth Provoking Monologues by Merry Mummers Superb Songs by Siren Singers Melodious Music by Masterly Manipulators" The performance is further advertised as "A Great Grand Glorious Gathering of Wit and Music Mirth and Melody" with the occasion designated as a "Stag" affair. Founded in 1889 the Sutter Club was Sacramento's leading private social club with a membership drawn from the city's political commercial and professional elite. Its first president Newton Booth had previously served as governor of California and United States senator. The club occupied rooms in the California National Bank Building at Fourth and J Streets the location specified on the broadside before moving to its present quarters in 1930. Although the broadside does not identify the performers or describe individual acts its prominent advertisement of a "Monster Minstrel" entertainment leaves little doubt about the theatrical tradition being invoked. An unusually large and well-preserved survival documenting the social entertainments of California's political establishment and the continued popularity of minstrelsy among the state's elite. .
