1915500 p. + Photo illustrations including several in color. 8vo. 8.5 x 7.75" Attractive original decorated full cloth binding. A wonderful record of proper behavior for the "upper classes" - just as World War One was threatening that way of life. Among the broad subjects are: introductions; dinners; table manners; engagements; weddings; balls & dances; luncheons; teas; theater and opera; house parties; musicales; garden parties; funerals; christenings; bachelor hospitalities; servants; correspondence; travel (including a nice bit on shipboard behavior); sports and games; etc. This edition is especially interesting because it includes photographs (one in color) of the enormously famous dance team Irene and Vernon Castle (later immortalized in the movies by Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers). "The Castles were undoubtedly the most famous ballroom dancers of their day, and while they did not invent social dancing, they were among the first to make a career of it. Vernon was tall and slightly built, and Irene willowy, boyish, and yet thoroughly feminine. Together they were a breath of air for a world stuck in the stodgy Edwardian mode. And their brief, almost incandescent career stands as a metaphor of an entire glittering, fragile world soon to be shattered by the horror of world war." - From paragonragtime. ETIQ 1

1856pp. 358 +numerous illustrations and plates of engravings, 5 beautifully hand colored flower plates and music. 16mo. 250mm. Boards mildly soiled and worn around the edges. Spine darkened, gilt faded and spine worn at head and base. Corners bumped. Contents lightly foxed. Hardbound. A good copy of this rare edition. This anthology contains works by notable authors such as Orville Dewey, one of Wordsworth's American friends. Dewey's essay, 'Practical Hints on Reading', advocates reading as a means of improving the lower classes. Harriet Beecher Stowe writes 'A Sketch', juxtaposing a rich man, with an ornate, unread bible next to his bed, with a poor woman, with a well read penny edition of the bible. Too poor to buy wood, she and her children huddle together and read the bible, achieving a spiritual warmth. Once again, reading for spiritual improvement and consolation is emphasized. NW51
