1930ref. 127955N.p. 1930s. Very Good. Vintage black-and-white snapshot photographs of women in costume dressed as clowns and as gangsters and gun molls. Produced by roving photographers who traveled with the caravan of performers and animals and some by local scene photographers. These images show intimate moments between friends: 2 show young women one name Violet who poses in clown costumes with Ethel and with Mildred in what appears to be an alley; the remaining 4 have printed ornate borders and show stoic flapper-dressed young women 2 show massive advertising billboards in the background and 1 of those features another woman in drag as a male gangster. Both sets feature an identifiable or recognizable central figure Violet and the stoic flapper with the pigtail bang and together the two similar bring to the life the era in format and its contemporary counterculture in subject. All approx 2.5 x 3.5 inches single-weight black-and-white with small borders blank versos except for the 4 with boards 300 stamped on versos: this could indicate the photos are from a set the "300" set given to patrons as souvenirs at the shows. Very Good overall each with partial evidence of removal from a scrapbook or album light rubbing and toning creases 2 with ink notations in the borders all with brief pencil notations also on the versos. Established in 1864 and with humble beginnings as a billboard poster printing company our business has evolved into a multi-faceted gateway to the global print marketplace. But we're still a family firm something you'll find reflected in our friendly approachable attitude and personal service.' As for Butlin's see the WIKI entry - 'Sir William Heygate Edmund Colborne Butlin MBE 29 September 1899 12 June 1980 was a South African-born British entrepreneur whose name is synonymous with the British holiday camp. Although holiday camps such as Warner's existed in one form or another before Butlin opened his first in 1936 it was Butlin who turned holiday camps into a multimillion-pound industry and an important aspect of British culture. Born in Cape Town South Africa to William and Bertha Butlin Butlin had a turbulent childhood. His parents separated before he was seven and he returned to England with his mother. He spent the next five years following his grandmother's family fair around the country where his mother sold gingerbread exposing the young Butlin to the skills of commerce and entertainment. When he was twelve his mother emigrated to Canada leaving him in the care of his aunt for two years. Once settled in Toronto his mother invited him to join her there. In Canada Butlin struggled to fit in at school and soon left for a job in a Toronto department store Eaton's. In World War I he enlisted as a bugler in the Canadian Army. After the war Butlin returned to England bringing only £5 with him. Investing £4 of that money to hire a stall travelling with his uncle's fair Butlin discovered that giving his customers a better chance to win brought more custom in and he quickly became successful. One stall became several including prominent locations such as Olympia in London and Butlin soon was able to purchase other fairground equipment and started his own travelling fair. He proved successful in this endeavour as well and by 1927 he opened a static fairground in Skegness. Over the next 10 years Butlin expanded his fairground empire all the time harbouring an idea to increase the number of patrons in his Skegness site by providing accommodation.' Willsons Printers.
