rif. 10291Circa 1910. With stamp of 'Mrs. Gill Translating Office Ludgate Hill London EC.'. The story on nine numbered 4to pages with a covering page carrying the title: 'THE BATTLE OF THE WAVES FOR FREEDOM. By Maxim Gorki.' On the rectos of ten 4to leaves attached by a brass pin. Text clear and complete at 26 lines to the page. On worn discoloured paper watermarked 'CONQUEROR LONDON' with loss to extremities. Mrs Gill's purple oblong stamp in bottom left-hand corner of reverse of last leaf: 'Mrs. GILL <.> ATING OFFICE <.> GATE HILL <.> ON EC.' A political parable with the narrator in a 'little sailing boat' told by 'an old weather-beaten tar' how 'the sea does not allow itself to be tied and bound'. First paragraph begins: 'A brilliant sun and a warm air. The sea was sinking into a calm though every now and then it rose again in slow majestic waves.' Certainly dating from before 1915 by which time Mrs Gill's Typing Office had moved from Ludgate Hill to Paternoster Row and probably dating from the period of Gorky's first foreign exile 1906 to 1913. Mrs L. A. Shiffner was active as a translator from Russian in 1904; Mrs Alice Gill did work for Gissing see his Collected Letters. I have yet to trace a published version of this story. [Circa 1910.] With stamp of 'Mrs. Gill, Translating Office, Ludgate Hill, London EC.' unknown

1930rif.

Some toning soiling and wear with small pinholes; good overall. An appealing promotional card reproducing Edward J. Kelty operated under the name Century Photographers in New York and traveled to circuses with a mobile studio and darkroom. He photographed performers and working crews developed the images on site and sold prints to circus personnel. The present card is a smaller printed reproduction of one of these group portraits. unknown

Eighth edition, 8vo (205 x 120 mm), xvi, 197, [1]pp., frontispiece silhouette portrait of Astley and 9 engraved plates, in an elegant twentieth century half green morocco binding by Sangorski and Sutcliffe, spine lightly faded, spine lettered in gilt direct, t.e.g. Philip Astley (1742-1814), equestrian performer and circus proprietor. As well as being considered the creator of the modern circus (Astley's Amphitheatre), Astley also had a very successful career in the Army. At the age of 17 he enrolled in the 15th Light Dragons, a cavalry regiment newly formed by Colonel Granville Elliott. A gifted equestrian, he was put in charge of breaking new horses for his regiment. In 1761, Astley and his regiment embarked for the Continent to fight alongside King Frederick II of Prussia in the Seven Years' War, he returned to England in 1766 with the rank of Sergeant Major and obtained his discharge on June 21st of that year. When the war between the United Kingdom and revolutionary France broke out in 1793, Astley, who was then 51, re-enlisted in the 15th Light Dragons, "acting as a horse-master, celebrity morale-booster and war correspondent in one."
