First edition of this beautifully illustrated homage to the 19th-century circus horse trick riders jugglers clowns and trapeze artists. All of the sepia-tinted plates have been executed with great precision and energy displaying a tremendous vitality and talent. Lang 1838-1891 studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich studied horses in the veterinary schools and stud farms of the Princes of Thurn and Taxis. 2011br. Il termine "Circo" è associato a degli stereotipi forti ma fuorvianti, legati all'immagine di un tendone polveroso che gira per le città carico di stranezze. Ma le "tecniche della meraviglia" sono antichissime ed hanno avuto esiti che nessuno storico dello spettacolo può trascurare, con folle di ammiratori ed una varietà di stili ed approcci all'impresa sorprendente per gli studiosi odierni. Obiettivo di questo volume è spolverare i luoghi comuni e mettere in evidenza quante e quali siano state le valenze del circo in diversi contesti storici, geografici e sociali. Così il lettore avrà modo di conoscere fatti curiosi la cui rilevanza va ben oltre l'aneddotica. Come l'attenzione di Marco Aurelio per i funamboli. L'influenza del teatro di Shakespeare sulla nascita del clown. L'entusiasmo del pubblico milanese per il teatro di varietà.
