1825réf. 002036Edinburgh: Printed for Daniel Lizars 1825. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Fair. First edition. Quarto 4to. An important comprehensively illustrated late-Georgian topographical survey of Edinburgh featuring the historical text by James Browne alongside stunning scenery compiled by the Lizars printing dynasty.Collation: Verified 100% complete. Collates as: Engraved frontispiece half-title page xiv contents pp. 1-225 plus 51 full-page engraved plates totaling 52 plates including frontispiece.Exquisitely illustrated with 52 crisp detailed copperplate engravings by William Home Lizars from drawings by John Ewbank depicting historic street scenes panoramic vistas castles and monument architecture across the Old and New Towns. Housed in the scarce original publisher's binding of a black leather spine with gilt titles over thick grey paper-covered boards. .Condition: Fair to Good. The original binding is heavily worn and rubbed with notable chipping to the corner tips and edges of the paper boards though the text block remains completely tight solid and square on its joints. Internally the text pages are in a surprising remarkably clean and bright state. The plates exhibit mild to occasionally heavier foxing mainly confined to the outer margins. .Exceptional Engraver's Presentation Provenance: The front free endpaper features a highly significant crisp contemporary ink inscription dated 1829: "John Carr presented by the engraver". This establishes the volume as an authentic direct gift from the master engraver William Home Lizars to John Carr a prominent contemporary Edinburgh merchant for whom Lizars' studio designed commercial trade engravings. A wonderful unique association copy deeply tied to the historical printing network of the city Printed for Daniel Lizars hardcover
