About the artist: Jean Auscher 1896-c. 1950 was a 20th century French artist caricaturist and illustrator. Auscher was a pupil at l'Ecole des Arts Decoratifs in Paris. His work was exhibited at Le Salon d'Automne and Le Salon des Tuileries between 1923 and 1933. His most characteristic work recorded the life "des Années Folles" in the Paris of the 1920s including scenes in the casinos gambling clubs and dance halls evoking the decadence of the demi-monde. He also recorded the theatrical community with portraits of actors some in their famous roles such as Louis Jouvet as "Le Trouhadec indigne" and the clown Grock. His best-known work appeared in limited edition folios published by the artist himself "La Faune des Dancings" 1925 and "Le Baccara" circa 1926. Many copies of the lithographs contained in these were heightened with watercolor. He contributed to the satirical journal "Le Rire"; he also illustrated works by Irène Némirovsky who was rediscovered when "Suite Française" was republished in 2004. Andre Haguenauer "Les Amertumes" 1925 and Alfred Machard "Printemps Sexuel" provided Auscher with subject matter that was again towards the margins of conventional attitudes to sexuality. Best.-Nr. 4671PORNOGRAPHIC WATERCOLORS. Album. 9pgs. 7 x 5. No date circa 1950s. Cleveland. A scrapbook of nine pornographic watercolors probably dating from the 1950s. On the back of the last page is a pencil note Drawn by an artist named Ganzman of Cleveland. Without giving away too many details the illustrations concern a relationship between Elsie May and Zeke and the drawings get more obscene as the book progresses. Finally Elsie Mays father a farmer shows up with a shotgun on the last page. Based on the misspellings the artist either wasnt a native English speaker or a poor speller. I do not believe this is the work of a teenage boy. The scrapbook is held together by two clasps and the edges have some wear and folds. unknown books

1965Best.-Nr. 30707Dallas TX: Tom Reamy. Good. 1965. Number 1. Magazine. nice clean copy externally fine but with small rectangular pieces cut out at the top and bottom corners of pp. 23/24 impacting the two film-related articles see Notes but none of the other content. pen & ink drawings B&W photographs The rare debut issue of this important sci-fi/fantasy-oriented fanzine which represented the editor's return to the publishing field after an earlier publication "CriFanAc" had crashed and burned in the late 1950s after the publication of a half-dozen issues. Some of this background a lot having to do with the early travails and infighting that plagued the Dallas Futurian Society of which editor Reamy was a co-founder is covered in his opening editorial screed which includes numerous references to various personalities who are no doubt long-gone-and-forgotten. "Trumpet" itself lasted for ten issues and was nominated a couple of times for a Hugo Award as Best Fanzine; Reamy himself died in 1977 at the age of 42. This issue is conspicuously fiction-heavy containing the following short stories: "The Altruist" by Charles Portis a Korean War tale which I believe is uncollected; at least it doesn't appear in the 2013 anthology of his work "Escape Velocity"; "The Cosmic Dancers" by James Twiggs; "The Demolished Fan" by Richard Koogle; "The Sisters" by Leonora Carrington a reprint of a 1945 story; and "The Traveling Salesman and the Farmer's Daughter" by Arthur Norman. Also in this issue: "I'm Not Afraid" an article by Marion Zimmer Bradley; a portfolio of Christmas card designs by Hannes Bok; "Existential Da-da Pop Art Funnies" several comic-strip features by Gilbert Shelton; two film-related pieces "Somebody Out There Likes Us!" by Al Jackson a survey of 50s and early 60s science fiction films and a reassessment of the 1954 giant-ant classic THEM! by Reamy both these articles are incomplete due to the corner-clipping of pp.23/24; "Le Sacre du Printemps" a portfolio four pen-and-ink drawings of a crone-like woman in various guises by Reamy; additional retro film reviews by Reamy of ATTACK OF THE GIANT LEECHES 1959 HAND OF DEATH 1962 and THE CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF 1961. An amazing amount of content really for a 40-page covers included magazine. . Tom Reamy unknown books

1958Best.-Nr. 2020First Edition. 185 pp. in blue cloth covered boards and printed dust jacket. 4to. Fair. Jacket with general discoloration and chipping several closed tears at spine and some loss to the rear. See below for interior description. 2020 A well-worn personal copy of The Blue and Brown Books which belonged to renowned philosopher and art critic Arthur C. Danto with his ownership inscription "Ar. Danto Dept of Philosophy Columbia University Ny. Ny." on the first endpaper. Additionally the "Blue Book" section bears Danto's underlining and annotations in ink and blue pencil throughout. More notably however the book also contains a few sketches by Danto: on page 62 there is a small head in the margin and partially overlapping the text and on the rear endpapers another head and a full figure below a pencilled note indicating the location of the first appearance of "language games" in the text all drawn in blue pencil. While he was an undergraduate Danto had intended to become an artist and apparently still indulged an occasional impulse in this direction even after his turn to philosophy. As such this copy is a unique testament to Danto's early ambitions and the development of his career. Harper and Brothers books
