Artist unidentified; two drawings initialled F.M.DESCRIPTIONAn attractive and historically interesting Victorian drawing album containing 42 original hand-executed topographical and landscape drawings principally depicting the River Arun and surrounding villages of West Sussex the River Thames and its historic watermills together with picturesque views of Surrey Hampshire Devonshire and other parts of England. The compositions are executed in delicate blue-black blue-grey and brown or sepia washes with pencilled titles identifying many of the subjects. The drawings display a consistent interest in historic architecture rural buildings rivers bridges churches mills and the changing character of the English countryside.Unlike a conventional sketchbook the illustrations were executed on separately prepared sheets subsequently trimmed and mounted into a cloth-bound drawing album. Twenty internal illustrated pages contain two compositions each while larger individual drawings occupy the front and rear endpapers. Two mounted drawing sheets bear the handwritten date 1886 including the opening drawing and a landscape depicting Houghton Cliffs and Arundel Park. The precise date of the album's compilation has not been established. The Sussex Drawings The Arun ValleyThe most substantial and geographically coherent group depicts the countryside surrounding Arundel Amberley Houghton Bury and South Stoke particularly the course of the River Arun through the South Downs.Subjects include views of Arundel Castle South Stoke Church Houghton Cliffs Houghton Bridge and its old sluice Amberley Cliffs Bury Church Castle Hill at Amberley traditional cottages around Houghton and the historic Black Rabbit at Arundel.Of particular interest are two compositions captioned Cunninghams and Cunninghams Looking East.Historical research has established that the Cunningham family operated the George and Dragon Inn at Houghton from approximately the 1860s until the early twentieth century. Robert Cunningham was succeeded as innkeeper by his son Charles.Comparison with an early photograph held by West Sussex Record Office reveals notable similarities in the arrangement of the road buildings roofs and surrounding landscape suggesting that at least one of these drawings may depict the George and Dragon or property associated with the Cunningham family. Certain architectural differences remain unresolved and the identification is therefore provisional.Another drawing is captioned Kennards Gate Amberley. Kennards is an identifiable historic timber-framed property in Amberley now Grade II listed although the precise gateway represented in the drawing has not been established. The concentration of such specific and relatively obscure subjects suggests a particular f - For full description please contact the seller hardcover
