1886ref. 5829Paris: J. Cahen Éditeur 1886. First edition of this collection. Fifty lithographed plates after Charlet signed in the stone and coloured by hand. Close examination shows the colouring is brushwork rather than printed colour: buttons and insignia are picked out individually the washes vary in tone and facings and highlights are heightened with opaque white. With a notice by A. Guillaumot fils. Folio. Contemporary red half morocco with corners spine with raised bands and gilt titles boards in red marbled paper heightened with gold. Light rubbing and a few marks to the covers. Owner's monogram on the first blank. Half-title and title printed in red and black. The deluxe limitation statement is on the verso of the half-title; this copy is from the ordinary issue. The plates are numbered 1 to 49 plus 12 bis as the table notes. Internally excellent and clean. Plate 10 Bonaparte Général en chef Armée d'Italie 1796 is captioned as Charlet's last lithograph 'terminée la veille de sa mort le 30 décembre 1845'. The work appears to have been issued as loose plates in a portfolio so a copy in a period binding is uncommon. It is scarce in commerce. Colas 609. OCLC 23427760. Nicolas-Toussaint Charlet Paris 1792-1845 was a pupil of Gros and a friend of Géricault. He fought at the Barrière de Clichy in 1814. His lithographs of the old soldiers of the Grande Armée some two thousand in all did more than almost any other body of work to create the Napoleonic legend. He was appointed professor of drawing at the École polytechnique in 1838. Colas 609.
