1810réf. 6342Venice: Nella tipografia Picotti 1810. Only edition. Very Good. Octavo 24 cm; 2 61 1 pages. Bound in woodblock-printed polychrome wraps with the poet's name written in ink along the spine. Only slight abrasions at the head else about fine. The notable bibliographer Bartolommeo Gamba curated this collection of poems by his neighbor in the town of Bassano del Grappa Giuseppe Bombardini. Bombardini's day job was in local government rising finally to the rank of "podestà" the equivalent of the mayoralty. Among the poems written to commemorate weddings and funerals we find Romantic sonnets dedicated to the summer night to the Brenta to two roses to the month of May. Nella tipografia Picotti paperback
1658réf. 5692Venice: Niccolo Pezzana 1658. Very Good. Quarto 23 cm; 50 of 52 788 8 152 pages. Lacks half-title. Four title pages each with Pezzana's woodcut device showing Jove Juno Vulcan and Neptune. Occasional woodcut initials and ornaments. Shoulder notes. Bound in marbled paper with leather backstrip; backstrip decorated and titled in gilt. Binding quite worn with joints tender and boards scuffed edges exposed. Text generally quite good with occasional worm trails the most severe of them in the margins. Pages evenly toned. References: Michel V 161. First Pezzana edition of the popular 16th-century "forest of many stories" by Spain's Pedro Mexia. Nicolò Pezzana purchased the famous Giunti press in 1657 making this one of the first titles issued under his name. The book is a Spanish Renaissance entry into the genre named "Silvae" by Statius but this text falls more into the tradition of Xenophon's Symposium Athenaeus Macrobius and Aulus Gellius that is expansive shapeless episodic with masses of detail and a stupefying variety of topics and narratives. It was incredibly popular in the 16th and 17th centuries reprinted in something like 106 editions in every European language. It was a rich treasure chest for later Renaissance authors such as Miguel Cervantes whose Quixote is also a forest of many tales several of them lifted from Mexia and Christopher Marlowe who pulled his Tamburlaine from its pages. It is now thoroughly obscure. Niccolo Pezzana hardcover
1728réf. 4165Venice: Lorenzo Basilio 1728. SOLE EDITION. Hardcover. Fine. Bound in contemporary carta rustica. Untrimmed with deckled edges preserved throughout. Fine condition with just a few leaves spotted. Extremely rare. OCLC and KVK locate 4 copies outside of Italy only 1 of which is in North America Harvard Law Library. The work has been attributed to Bartolommeo Melchiori who also authored a book on criminal law "Miscellanea di materie criminali volgari e latine composta secondo le leggi civili e venete" Venezia 1741. The author's name appears only once in the book on the final leaf of text as "Bart. Melchi." Problems addressed in Part I include: examination by the court of murder victims with a special section on identifying victims of poisoning; identifying a murderer via cruentation the common belief that the body of the victim would spontaneously bleed in the presence of the murderer; where to try murder by decapitation when the head is found in one jurisdiction and the body in another; charging and incarcerating those accused of murder; modern versus ancient forms of punishment for the crime of murder; whether a person can claim ecclesiastical immunity from prosecution; punishments for accessories to the crime; whether causing the death of a child in utero killing a deformed child or causing the death of a child through exposure are to be considered murder; whether killing someone willing to die or committing suicide should be considered acts of murder. Part II deals with problems such as: whether one who attempts murder be judged the same as a murderer; if a wounded person dies of wounds that were in fact curable or if the victim dies because of poor medical care is the one who inflicted the wound guilty of murder; Whether killing in self-defense is justified; whether killing one's wife or husband for cheating is justified etc. Lorenzo Basilio hardcover
