The poem is sixteen lines long arranged in two eight-line stanzas. The first stanza reads: '"Sometimes" - Althaea sighed - "in hours of sadness A sudden pleasure shines upon the soul; The heart beats quick to half-heard notes of gladness And from the dark mind all its clouds unroll: How comes this Poet! You who know things hidden Whence sounds that undersong of soft Content What brings such peace unlooked-for & unbidden! Answer me! Is it truth or accident" The printed version has 'sighed Lalage' instead of 'Althaea sighed'; 'How is this' for 'How comes this'; and 'Say now! Oh is it' for 'Answer me! Is it'. Sheet with specifications for a lamp Model No. 950 laid in with some chipping to the left margin. Catalog for alkaline battery-powered lamps used in mines. Alkaline lamps were developed in the late 1920s and prone to leaking battery fluid but were a vast improvement on flame-based mining lamps. The introductory statement notes the safety benefits and improved worker efficiency that comes with a less volatile portable light source and suggests that at press time butane lamps had been superseded by electric ones. The Wolf Safety Lamp Company was established in Leeds in 1880. [Wolf Safety Lamp Co.] paperback
2011ref. 263455Spoleto: Archivio Fotografico 2011. Two related items in a clever slipcase cum snap-closer box: largely captioned portrait and group photography b&w only in the Gian Carlo Menotti honor-fest vivid color in book devoted to Carla Fendi. Neither volume paginated Fendi's is lengthy and bound in laminated colorphoto boards the Menotti in openweave black cloth and dust jacket and much shorter. Item shows very classy upper-class doings the men in formal attire the women quite variously dressed there are g-strings for burly-que fun. Readers musically in tune will recognize many faces here this cataloguer was merely Oooo! Pavarotti! Both Menotti and Fendi make people open up; he for example is the only party host who ever publicly drew out Jackie Onassis' reserve; his congrats to her on RFK's win in the 1968 CA primary was met with her flairing "Why they will just kill him like they killed my husband" a remark that made European media but not here. ref. 19555Malta. 7 January 1896. 3pp. tall 8vo. Bifolium. In good condition lightly aged and worn. Folded four times. With regard to Philpot's desire to obtain 'employment under Her Majesty's Government' as a 'public servant' he has applied to McLeod 'for a testimonial as to his Conduct and Efficiency as an Officer during the seven years he served in the 74th Highlanders': ''There has been but one opinion of him in the Corps which was that he was a most able active intelligent and gallant officer possessed of much common sense and sound judgment. He served throughout the Kaffir War of 1851-52-53 and on the death of Lt Colonel Fordyce in action in the Waterbloop - he was left for some time the only surviving officer in a most dangerous position encumbered with wonded and took an active part in the attack to cover their removal which was completely effected under his orders'. He describes another occasion in which Philpot 'volunteered to carry an order to a detached party' before noting his departure from the regiment 'as a Captain to the great regret of all ranks on account of ill health in India'. Despite his glowing testimonial surprisingly little is to be discovered concerning Philpot. McLeod has an entry in Who Was Who. Malta. 7 January 1896. unknown
