FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request - IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - Flawless copy brand new pristine never opened -- 180 pages; well illustrated. -- with a bonus offer--; I Am Because We Are is the companion volume to the acclaimed forthcoming documentary film directed by Nathan Rissman and written and produced by Madonna. This book of images by award-winning photojournalist Kristen Ashburn--culled from her own work in Malawi and Africa over the past seven years as well as from her specially commissioned photographs for the film--provides an intimate look at the lives of eight Malawian children featured in the film and reveals the harsh reality of the AIDS pandemic throughout southern Africa. The title is derived from the concept of "Ubuntu" an idea in African spirituality that states that all of humanity is connected that we cannot be ourselves without community that an individual's well-being is dependent upon the well-being of others. These heart-wrenching stories are a call to action. In Malawi a country of 13 million people over one million are orphans. Looking into the hearts and minds of children who have suffered more than one can imagine the book provides an unflinching view of life at the center of the global AIDS crisis. This is not just a story about orphans in Malawi but about global responsibility and human interconnectedness. I Am Because We Are includes a foreword by Madonna an afterword by Ashburn excerpts from interviews with Malawian children their biographies and extended captions. Author proceeds from the sale of the book will be donated to the charitable organization Raising Malawi for their extensive work with orphans throughout Malawi. . 2009. 1576874826 . powerHouse Books hardcover

Shelved Case 14. Madonna Louise Ciccone known primarily as the mononym 'Madonna' was born August 16 1958 in Bay City Michigan. Best known as the "Queen of Pop" Madonna is a versatile artist who has always reinvented herself her music and artistic styles across a long career spanning from humble beginnings as a dancer and musician in New York in 1978 to her solo stardom in 1983 with her self-titled debut album "Madonna" and well into today. Madonna would begin her writing career writing the coffee table book "Sex" in 1992 which featured adult content including softcore pornography and simulations of sexual acts. The financial success of "Sex" led the publishing company Callaway Arts & Entertainment who had published the book to greater renown and thus its owner Nicholas Callaway to look for ways to diversify and expand the business. Thus it was that after witnessing Madonna reading a book to a group of teenagers for the release of her music video "Bedtime Story" Callaway would bring the idea of writing a children's story to Madonna. At first other obligations took the singer away from the idea but after giving birth to her son Rocco Madonna would begin to work on her first children's book; "The English Roses". A moral tale it would release in 100 countries translated into 42 languages being one of the first books to ever do so simultaneously. "The English Roses" would debut at the top of the New York Times Bestseller list finishing at the fifth place for overall releases in 2003. While reviews were mixed it's overall success and positive public reception would encourage Madonna to write more children's books including 2 more picture books and a chapter book series which used the same characters from the first book. It would also result in Madonna writing "Mr. Peabody's Apples" "Yakov and the Seven Thieves" "The Adventures of Abdi" and "Lotsa de Casha" themselves also well-received if less commercially successful. 1384529.
