Expo: 26/03/2015 - 05/07/2015, British Museum, London Greek sculpture is full of breathing vitality and yet, at the same time, it reaches beyond mere imitation of nature to give form to thought in works of timeless beauty. For over 2000 years the Greeks experimented with representing the human body in works that range from prehistoric abstract simplicity to the full-blown realism of the age of Alexander the Great. The ancient Greeks invented the modern idea of the human body in art as an object of sensory delight and as a bearer of meaning. Their vision has had a profound influence on the way the western world sees itself. Drawing on the British Museums outstanding collection of Greek sculpture including extraordinary pieces from the Parthenon and the celebrated representation of a discus thrower and through a number of themed sections, this richly illustrated book explores the Greek portrayal of human character in sculpture, along with sexual and social identity. In athletics, the male body was displayed as if it was a living sculpture, and victors were commemorated by actual statues. In art, not only were mortal men and women represented in human form but also the gods and other beings of myth and the supernatural world. In a series of lively introductory chapters, written by a selection of academics, historians and artists, it is revealed how the Greeks themselves viewed the sculpture (which was vividly enhanced with colour), and how it was regarded and treated in later pagan antiquity. The revival of the Greek body in the modern era is also discussed, including the shock of the new effect of the arrival of the Parthenon sculptures in London at the beginning of the nineteenth century.

Hardcover, 174 pages, ENG / FR, 265 x 205 x 20 mm, New edition, illustrated in colour, . ISBN 9782930451237. ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Frank Steyaert was born at Dendermonde, in Belgium, in 1953. His work is linked to the Nouvelle Céramique international movement which emerged in the 1970s, characterised in particular by a realistic sculptural approach. A multidisciplinary artist with a vast technical background, he is a ceramicist and a creator of jewels, prints, furniture, and monumental terracotta pieces integrated in architectural projects. These less known aspects came under the spotlight for the first time with the various versions of the ceramic shipwrecks for which he has become famous. Ludovic Recchia, the Artistic Director of the Keramis Centre, has brought together several authors, in particular Frédéric Bodet, Stéphanie Le Follic-Hadida, Marc Dubois, and Carine Verleye, who throw light on the eclectic works of this astonishing artist. This monograph is published in collaboration with Keramis, which is holding a major retrospective dedicated to the artist. Keramis, established on the site of the old Boch pottery at La Louvière, is a space for creation and the arts, specifically dedicated to the ceramic medium.

Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux (1827 -1875) was an extraordinarily gifted sculptor the greatest in 19th-century France before Rodin and embodied the emotionally charged artistic climate of his era. The passionate Carpeaux comes alive in this handsome new publication. Carpeaux?s wrenching representations of human forms, shown in beautiful color details and illustrations, echo his turbulent personal life, fraught with episodes of violence and fatal illness. The book covers the entire span of Carpeaux?s career, and includes the masterpiece Ugolino and His Sons, newly discovered drawings, and a number of rarely seen or studied works. Previously unpublished letters between Carpeaux and his family and friends, a wealth of archival material, and the most detailed chronology of the artist's life ever published make this book the definitive resource on the artist and his creations.
