Recognized as one of the finest private collections of Renaissance medals in existence they were purchased by the Kress Foundation and given to the National Gallery of Art Washington D.C. in 1957. The collection is remarkable for the range it covers as well as for the superb quality of the single medals it contains. The largest part consists of Italian medals of the fourteenth to sixteenth centuries; important medals from France Germany and the Low Countries are also included as well as a few coins. There are many fine examples of the medallic art of Pisanello Niccolò Fiorentino and his school Leoni Durpé Hagenauer and Gebel.
