19268vo., First Edition, with frontispiece in photogravure (original tissue guard present), title in blue and black, 79 sepia-toned plates, several musical notations, maps and diagrams in the text, free endpapers moderately browned; original buff cloth, upper board with frame border in brown, backstrip blocked and lettered in brown, red top, covers lightly dust-soiled, backstrip faded (but all lettering just legible) else a very good, clean copy. Rice's third work on carillons and the most extended in coverage. Although produced by an eminent publisher, the UK edition is curiously scarce; its US counterpart is commonplace by comparison. Rice was the first author to document in English the history and techniques of carillon music; this is arguably his most important work. EXTREMELY SCARCE.
1996xi, [2], 263 pages. Profusely illustrated with black and white photos. Selected bibliography. Index. Printed on glossy stock. "Presents a comprehensive history of the carillon in North America." - dust jacket. Chapters include: The Carillon in Europe; The Carillon in North America (1883-1933); The Emergence of a North American Art (1934-1975); The North American Keyboard; The Carillon as a Concert Instrument (1976-1996); plus appendices which provide comprehensive data and photos of North American carillons. Former library copy with usual markings and somewhat above-average wear. Binding intact. A worthy reading copy of this wonderful reference. Book
