1901réf. 63092Buffalo NY & Chicago IL: Mackson; Lyman 1901. Archive of 46 original albumen photographs sized from 3 x 6 in. up to 4 x 6 in. all of the images smaller than 4 x 5 in. on albumen paper stock many w/ embossed photographer’s stamps several w/ photographer’s imprint w/in negative some w/ small rubber stamp at lower fore-edge of verso as well as pencil manuscript annotations identifying subject inventory nos. w/ in negatives of several a few w/ evidence of having been previously mounted a couple w/very slight dog-eared corners 1 w/ closed tear at lower fore-edge a couple w/ image evidencing poor process chemicals still an exceptional group of images. This set of photographs was created by two different Illinois & Missouri photographers at the 1901 Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo NY -- both of whom had lived and worked in Chicago at the beginning of the 1890’s offering reasonably priced “unofficial” vernacular images of the 1893 Columbian Exposition World’s Fair followed by the Pan-American World’s Fair. The fair featured a range of acts and attractions featured at the Exposition which included Bostock’s Trained Wild Animals “A Trip to the Moon” “Cleopatra’s Temple” Henry Roltair’s illusionist show “House upside down” and the Battle of Missionary Ridge Cyclorama. Many of the Exposition buildings including the prominent Electric Tower were covered in approximately 2 million 100 watt incandescent light bulbs producing an incredible display when turned on each night attracting millions of people who visited. This Exposition marked a defining moment in Buffalo history with the city becoming the focus of international architectural artistic technological and industrial attention at the Fair. It is sadly largely remembered as the scene of the tragic assassination of President McKinley. Vernacular souvenir photos are quite scarce and these have an unusual sharpness in light of the fact that like the 1893 Columbian all were prevented from bringing in tripods to shoot the Exposition. One of the photographs captures African natives from the Midway’s “African Village” which incorporated Africans from the colonial empires of Great Britain Belgium Germany & France along with participants from Georgia who were “staged” in the “Old Plantation” representing the enslavement of African-Americans in North America. Another Black History exhibit included was the “Negro Exhibit” previously exhibited at the 1900 L’Exposition Universelle in Paris depicting the accomplishments of formerly enslaved people and languished at the far back of the Manufacturers and Liberal Arts Building. Samuel Lyman 1854-1939 was an intrepid tinkerer junk dealer and photographer who shot souvenir photos for his customers during the Columbian Exposition in 1893. Two of his sons Joseph Lyman 1887-1953 and Harry Lyman 1883-1940 became successful photographers in Kansas City MO during the Roaring 20’s. Mackson fl. 1885-1910 immigrated from Russia into Chicago in the 1880’s and operated a small photo studio there until about 1900 before relocating to Kansas City and St. Louis MO during the opening decade of the 20th Century operating photography studios in both cities. Historically interesting collection of early well-executed photographs documenting the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition PPIE in San Francisco. The PPIE world fair held from February 20 to December 4 1915 celebrated the completion of the Panama Canal and highlighted San Francisco’s recovery from the 1906 earthquake. The fair occupied a 636-acre site along the northern shore now the Marina District attracting around 19 million visitors. It featured numerous grand structures built exclusively for the event most of which were dismantled shortly afterward except for the Palace of Fine Arts which still stands today. The album contains 84 vibrant views of the Panama International Exposition apparently taken by an American tourist during the summer of 1915. About thirty excellent photographs show the main architectural structures of the PPIE including palaces Horticulture Food Products Fine Arts Varied Industries Transportation international pavilions Siam Portugal Canada Netherlands buildings California & Ferry towers Jewels and Italian arches the Setting and Rising Sun and fountains Energy and Earth. Several candid urban scenes vividly portray dressed-up visitors busily strolling through the Court of the Universe and Court of Four Seasons. There are also two interesting portraits likely showing the compiler and his female companion proudly posing with the coveted visitors' medals. Most of the other photos are well-executed close-up views of exhibited statues - the End of Trail Pioneer Mother Prima Mater the Rising Sun Maidenhood Genius of Creation Fountain of Energy the Kiss etc. The album closes with vibrant photographs of the “Joy Zone” showing specially created attractions – Japan Beautiful Creation Ride and The Souvenir Watch Palace of the New Haven Clock Company. The collection also includes a large striking photograph of the Tower of the Sun at night with the inscription "Photo by Eachus! " on its verso. Overall historically interesting album illustrating the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco. hardcover

1915réf. List1003Chicago: National Half Century Anniversary Exposition and Lincoln Jubilee 1915. Felt pennant measuring 38 x 15 inches. Lettering slightly faded very good condition overall. In celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of Lincoln's death the city of Chicago hosted the National Half Century Anniversary Exposition and Lincoln Jubilee to celebrate emancipation and the cultural achievements of African-Americans. The event was held at the Coliseum on August 23 - September 22 1915. The Illinois legislature appropriated $75000 for the month-long celebration. Seventeen states appointed African American delegates to attend the event as representatives. Delegates from other countries participated as well. Bishop Samuel Fallows the English-born clergyman and Union Army Colonel spent a decade promoting and organizing the event urging states such as New York to appoint representatives and encouraging Chicago's religious leaders to attend. Several hundred pastors from African-American churches did attend along with members of their congregations and most contemporary accounts of the jubilee advertise speeches by African-American religious leaders. Charles F. Gunther a local candy manufacturer and collector of Lincoln memorabilia lent his collection to the event it was later purchased by the Chicago Historical Society. The event's organizers anticipated close to half a million attendees. Though we find no record of actual attendance contemporary reports show crowds of tens of thousands attending at a time. The Colored Women's Civic League closed the exposition with a ceremony involving children. Despite the large undertaking and historical significance of the event few relics of the exhibition have survived. OCLC lists two copies of the official program for the event. The official report of the event History and Report of the Exhibition and Celebration to Commemorate the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Emancipation of the Negro has around 20 holdings. We find no other record of this commemorative pennant an unusual survival. Condition is very good with some light wear. National Half Century Anniversary Exposition and Lincoln Jubilee unknown books

1981réf. 216885Beijing. Circa1981. A complete set of 50 black and white photographs of the trial of the Gang of Four during 1980-81. Images clearly show the judges the courtroom and the accused. In excellent condition each photograph is loosely inserted within an A5 polypropylene sleeve all contained in an archival-grade cardboard box. All images measure approximately 20.5 x 15cm. A fascinating series of photos from the trial of the Gang of Four and the so-called remnants of Lin Biao's Central Cultural Revolution Group including images of the court physical evidence and the accused themselves - including though not limited to Jiang Qing Zhang Chunqiao Wang Hongwen and Yao Wenyuan. Included are photos of the accused - in clearly poorer physical health compared to their peak in 1976 - after having reputedly given emotive vitriolic and stubborn statements to the court. Though Jiang Qing and Zhang Chunqiao appear openly hostile or contemptuous to the court - both in their own unique way - Wang Hongwen Yao Wenyuan and the other defendants appear more subdued and mournful in their demeanour seemingly having resigned themselves to their fate. Of particular note is the inclusion of a single page of images of what appears to be the badly charred and broken corpse of Lin Biao as well as the wreckage of his ill-fated flight. These images were presumably supplied to the court by the KGB who had very controversially handled the investigation at the time of the crash despite it having taken place over and within the territory of the Mongolian People's Republic not the Soviet Union. Perhaps to further affirm the position that the corpse was indeed Lin's a forensic-like comparison is made between an image of the body's skull and his distinctive forehead and brow ridge. . unknown

Very scarce original souvenir puzzle game issued for the fourth great Paris World’s Fair celebrating through pomp and events the Centennial of the French Revolution and the storming of the Bastille. The Exposition was intended to pull France out of a ruinous recession and attracted over 61000 exhibitors as well as 32 million visitors many of whom came to view the iconic Eiffel Tower. This puzzle celebrates several of the pavilions at the Exposition including Palais des Beaux-Arts designed by Joseph Brouvard filled with painting and flanking the Eiffel Tower providing visitors; the Palais de Trocadero held over from the famed 1878 Exposition celebrating the renewal of Paris following the Franco-Prussian War; as well as the Ministere de la Guerre which featured an Arms & Armour exhibition as well as displays of knightly tournaments assorted uniforms and cannon. The Maison Egyptienne and Rue au Caire would fuel the Orientalist movement and fascination with the Middle East among artists writers and the industrial arts well into the 20th Century. These boxed puzzle games were quite popular souvenirs as well as educational tools in the Belle Epoque and have become remarkably scarce. No copies in Worldcat. n.p., unknown
1851réf. 3220148Lithograph strip panorama consisting of four sheets conjoined measuring 12 x 230 cm overall some light dust-soiling in places; folding into publisher's original boards the upper cover with an illustration of a showman in military attire drumming up an audience for a show consisting of a Punch and Judy-style booth with what appear curiously to be marionettes rather than glove-puppets dancing on the stage spine expertly repaired covers slightly marked but nevertheless still a good example. Rare panorama consisting of 75 captioned vignettes of the people of many nationalities idly wasting time or misbehaving themselves in mostly harmless ways: "A Highland Gentleman practising the Art of Boozing" "John Bull sleeping on the National Debt" "A Hindoo Gentleman enjoying Hookah" "Young Irish Lady doing penance by walking on sharp stones round a well" "A New Zealand Chief polishing the skull of one of his enemies" and so on. It concludes with 'A French Patriot playing Battledoor i.e. battledore & Shuttlecock' the character hitting two crowns and a bonnet-rouge into the air. Although unsigned the artist for the work is clearly Benjamin Clayton 1809-1883 what little we know of him comes mainly from his daughter the writer and artist Ellen Creathorne 1834-1900. Benjamin was born in Dublin but moved his family to London in 1841 hoping to be a history painter however his gifts lay instead with illustration firstly producing his own periodicals gChatg and gPunchinello. A journal of wit wisdom and romanceg but later having to work for other publishers first with Ackermann & Co. and later for Dean and Son.
