2009Best.-Nr. BN27038Scheidegger & Spiess 2009. 2009. Hardcover. - Karl Bodmer born in Zurich in 1809 is well known in the present day for the magnificent illustrations he made in 1832-34 on an extensive expedition led by the German aristocrat and scientist Prinz Maximilian zu Neuwied along the upper Missouri and Ohio rivers. Bodmer's more than 400 detailed sketches and watercolours are unsurpassed until the present day and still recognised as an epitome in depicting alien culture and they are among the most important documents of Native American culture. This book marks Bodmer's 200th anniversary and is an homage to the painter who gave so many detailed and lively insights into the way of life and appearance of the native people in the North American plains and prairies. It presents all 81 engravings after his watercolours used to illustrate Prince Maximilian's travels in the interiors of North America besides of many of his original watercolours and sketches and also photographs of artefacts collected during the expedition. The illustrations are complemented by essays on Bodmer's life and investigating key aspects of his oeuvre as well as the particular nature of his work between scientific illustration and art. Autor: Hartwig Isernhagen born 1940 has been professor of American literature at the University of Basel Switzerland from 1981-2004. He is an expert of Karl Bodmer and his work and curator of an exhibition marking Bodmer's 200th anniversary at the North American Native Museum in Zurich in 2009. Pictorial green cloth gilt illustration & lettering front cover & spine minor scuffing edgewear couple minor bumped corners front inner hinge starting still VG- copy from library of Prof. Marvin Nathan. First edition of this massive compilation of addresses and reports presented at the Colombian Exposition. Of particular interest is the amount devoted to eastern religions including Hinduism Buddhism Bramo-Somaj Shintoism Confucianism Zoroastrianism as well as Islam. The editor has included papers on the role of Buddhism in Siam and Japan the development of Confucianism extracts from the Koran and more. Of particular interest are the papers presented by African-Americans on the “American Negroe’s” role in Christianity including addresses by Bishop Arnett of the African Methodist Ethiopian Church as well as Fannie Barrier Williams on the “Religious Duty to the Negro” and “The Catholic Church and the Negro Race” by J.R. Slattery of Baltimore. Fannie Williams was a vociferous proponent of education for African-American women writing that in terms “of employment colored women bear a distressing burden of mean and unreasonable discrimination . . . colored women can find no employment in this free America.” As African-Americans were almost entirely excluded from the 1893 Columbian Exposition these papers and addresses offer just a few of the efforts by the Black community to engage with attendees. Rodney Eckerson 1930-2024 former purchasing agent for the Port of Portland. This souvenir photo album features 25 original photographs documenting two couple’s 1905 visit to the Lewis & Clark Centennial Exposition which marked the anniversary of the famed exploration across the North American continent after the Louisiana Purchase. The album opens with two photographs of the Forestry Building composed entirely of giant Douglas Fir logs; while the following photos capture the giant lagoon constructed from Guild’s Lake the Foreign Exhibits Building Agriculture and Horticulture Palace the U.S. Government Building at the end of the Bridge of Nations and Frederic Remington’s sculpture “Coming through the Rye” later renamed “Off the Trail” of four wild cowboys coming into town. Of special interest is one woman standing at the base of one of the several Native Alaskan totem poles on the shore of Guild’s Lake during the Exposition and later moved to Sitka National Historical Park in Sitka Alaska. Vernacular photo albums composed by amateur photographers during the run of the Exposition are quite uncommon and most fairgoers relied on Robert Reid Shogren and the Kiser Bros. for their souvenir images. n.p., hardcover
1901Best.-Nr. 63092Buffalo NY & Chicago IL: Mackson; Lyman 1901. Archive of 46 original albumen photographs sized from 3 x 6 in. up to 4 x 6 in. all of the images smaller than 4 x 5 in. on albumen paper stock many w/ embossed photographer’s stamps several w/ photographer’s imprint w/in negative some w/ small rubber stamp at lower fore-edge of verso as well as pencil manuscript annotations identifying subject inventory nos. w/ in negatives of several a few w/ evidence of having been previously mounted a couple w/very slight dog-eared corners 1 w/ closed tear at lower fore-edge a couple w/ image evidencing poor process chemicals still an exceptional group of images. This set of photographs was created by two different Illinois & Missouri photographers at the 1901 Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo NY -- both of whom had lived and worked in Chicago at the beginning of the 1890’s offering reasonably priced “unofficial” vernacular images of the 1893 Columbian Exposition World’s Fair followed by the Pan-American World’s Fair. The fair featured a range of acts and attractions featured at the Exposition which included Bostock’s Trained Wild Animals “A Trip to the Moon” “Cleopatra’s Temple” Henry Roltair’s illusionist show “House upside down” and the Battle of Missionary Ridge Cyclorama. Many of the Exposition buildings including the prominent Electric Tower were covered in approximately 2 million 100 watt incandescent light bulbs producing an incredible display when turned on each night attracting millions of people who visited. This Exposition marked a defining moment in Buffalo history with the city becoming the focus of international architectural artistic technological and industrial attention at the Fair. It is sadly largely remembered as the scene of the tragic assassination of President McKinley. Vernacular souvenir photos are quite scarce and these have an unusual sharpness in light of the fact that like the 1893 Columbian all were prevented from bringing in tripods to shoot the Exposition. One of the photographs captures African natives from the Midway’s “African Village” which incorporated Africans from the colonial empires of Great Britain Belgium Germany & France along with participants from Georgia who were “staged” in the “Old Plantation” representing the enslavement of African-Americans in North America. Another Black History exhibit included was the “Negro Exhibit” previously exhibited at the 1900 L’Exposition Universelle in Paris depicting the accomplishments of formerly enslaved people and languished at the far back of the Manufacturers and Liberal Arts Building. Samuel Lyman 1854-1939 was an intrepid tinkerer junk dealer and photographer who shot souvenir photos for his customers during the Columbian Exposition in 1893. Two of his sons Joseph Lyman 1887-1953 and Harry Lyman 1883-1940 became successful photographers in Kansas City MO during the Roaring 20’s. Mackson fl. 1885-1910 immigrated from Russia into Chicago in the 1880’s and operated a small photo studio there until about 1900 before relocating to Kansas City and St. Louis MO during the opening decade of the 20th Century operating photography studios in both cities.
