1990réf. 159588San Francisco: Art Lick Gallery 1990. Vintage flyer advertising San Francisco-based Art Lick Gallery circa 1990. The Art Lick Gallery was opened by artists David Seibold and Luiz da Rosa in 1989 and was at that time the only art gallery located in the Castro District. Founded just as the catastrophic impact of the AIDS crisis was beginning to be fully appreciated in the national media and during an unprecedented attempt at censoring art particularly queer art the gallery served as a safe haven for the LGBTQ art community as well as a bulwark against attacks to the community. In Seibold's own words the gallery was "an alternative to 'downtown' gallery spaces places that sometimes present art work as being so precious and intimidating that it's really unapproachable." Notable among the exhibitions held at Art Lick were Christopher Enzi's "Inferno & Other Scenes" Jerome Caja's "Compact" and the group exhibition "Eros." The shows held at the gallery which included both group and one- and two-person shows proved essential not only to the Castro community but also to the queer community at large during a period often described by many without hyperbole as a time at war. The gallery closed after Seibold's death in 1992. 8.5 x 11 inches. Near Fine with some light edgewear. Art Lick Gallery unknown

Pictorial green cloth gilt illustration & lettering front cover & spine minor scuffing edgewear couple minor bumped corners front inner hinge starting still VG- copy from library of Prof. Marvin Nathan. First edition of this massive compilation of addresses and reports presented at the Colombian Exposition. Of particular interest is the amount devoted to eastern religions including Hinduism Buddhism Bramo-Somaj Shintoism Confucianism Zoroastrianism as well as Islam. The editor has included papers on the role of Buddhism in Siam and Japan the development of Confucianism extracts from the Koran and more. Of particular interest are the papers presented by African-Americans on the “American Negroe’s” role in Christianity including addresses by Bishop Arnett of the African Methodist Ethiopian Church as well as Fannie Barrier Williams on the “Religious Duty to the Negro” and “The Catholic Church and the Negro Race” by J.R. Slattery of Baltimore. Fannie Williams was a vociferous proponent of education for African-American women writing that in terms “of employment colored women bear a distressing burden of mean and unreasonable discrimination . . . colored women can find no employment in this free America.” As African-Americans were almost entirely excluded from the 1893 Columbian Exposition these papers and addresses offer just a few of the efforts by the Black community to engage with attendees. With 25 silver gelatin photos on Velvet Velox Kodak paper mounted w/ silver corners sized 3.25 x 5 in. 1st leaf w/ reverse duplicate on verso. Padded black ribbed cloth album faint lettering stamped on front cover minor edgewear rubbing some minor bumping to corners slight curling to photos still a VG exemplar from the library of A. Rodney Eckerson 1930-2024 former purchasing agent for the Port of Portland. This souvenir photo album features 25 original photographs documenting two couple’s 1905 visit to the Lewis & Clark Centennial Exposition which marked the anniversary of the famed exploration across the North American continent after the Louisiana Purchase. The album opens with two photographs of the Forestry Building composed entirely of giant Douglas Fir logs; while the following photos capture the giant lagoon constructed from Guild’s Lake the Foreign Exhibits Building Agriculture and Horticulture Palace the U.S. Government Building at the end of the Bridge of Nations and Frederic Remington’s sculpture “Coming through the Rye” later renamed “Off the Trail” of four wild cowboys coming into town. Of special interest is one woman standing at the base of one of the several Native Alaskan totem poles on the shore of Guild’s Lake during the Exposition and later moved to Sitka National Historical Park in Sitka Alaska. Vernacular photo albums composed by amateur photographers during the run of the Exposition are quite uncommon and most fairgoers relied on Robert Reid Shogren and the Kiser Bros. for their souvenir images. n.p., hardcover
1901réf. 63092Buffalo NY & Chicago IL: Mackson; Lyman 1901. Archive of 46 original albumen photographs sized from 3 x 6 in. up to 4 x 6 in. all of the images smaller than 4 x 5 in. on albumen paper stock many w/ embossed photographer’s stamps several w/ photographer’s imprint w/in negative some w/ small rubber stamp at lower fore-edge of verso as well as pencil manuscript annotations identifying subject inventory nos. w/ in negatives of several a few w/ evidence of having been previously mounted a couple w/very slight dog-eared corners 1 w/ closed tear at lower fore-edge a couple w/ image evidencing poor process chemicals still an exceptional group of images. This set of photographs was created by two different Illinois & Missouri photographers at the 1901 Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo NY -- both of whom had lived and worked in Chicago at the beginning of the 1890’s offering reasonably priced “unofficial” vernacular images of the 1893 Columbian Exposition World’s Fair followed by the Pan-American World’s Fair. The fair featured a range of acts and attractions featured at the Exposition which included Bostock’s Trained Wild Animals “A Trip to the Moon” “Cleopatra’s Temple” Henry Roltair’s illusionist show “House upside down” and the Battle of Missionary Ridge Cyclorama. Many of the Exposition buildings including the prominent Electric Tower were covered in approximately 2 million 100 watt incandescent light bulbs producing an incredible display when turned on each night attracting millions of people who visited. This Exposition marked a defining moment in Buffalo history with the city becoming the focus of international architectural artistic technological and industrial attention at the Fair. It is sadly largely remembered as the scene of the tragic assassination of President McKinley. Vernacular souvenir photos are quite scarce and these have an unusual sharpness in light of the fact that like the 1893 Columbian all were prevented from bringing in tripods to shoot the Exposition. One of the photographs captures African natives from the Midway’s “African Village” which incorporated Africans from the colonial empires of Great Britain Belgium Germany & France along with participants from Georgia who were “staged” in the “Old Plantation” representing the enslavement of African-Americans in North America. Another Black History exhibit included was the “Negro Exhibit” previously exhibited at the 1900 L’Exposition Universelle in Paris depicting the accomplishments of formerly enslaved people and languished at the far back of the Manufacturers and Liberal Arts Building. Samuel Lyman 1854-1939 was an intrepid tinkerer junk dealer and photographer who shot souvenir photos for his customers during the Columbian Exposition in 1893. Two of his sons Joseph Lyman 1887-1953 and Harry Lyman 1883-1940 became successful photographers in Kansas City MO during the Roaring 20’s. Mackson fl. 1885-1910 immigrated from Russia into Chicago in the 1880’s and operated a small photo studio there until about 1900 before relocating to Kansas City and St. Louis MO during the opening decade of the 20th Century operating photography studios in both cities. With birds-eye view by Caughey on recto advertisement for Willson in lower right corner center crease fold as issued; postcard information and cancelled stamp & postmark for Portland addressed to W.H. Bilyen 90 1/2 - 5th St. City Portland Oregon minor dustsoiling slight toning very minor wear at fold crease still VG copy. First edition of this uncommon folding souvenir postcard celebrating the Lewis & Clark Centennial Exposition featuring and reproducing the famed Caughey birds-eye. The birds-eye depicts the Guild’s Lake area of the grounds up and operating now bounded by Reed to Thurston Streets and 31st to 24th Streets in NW Portland. Prof. Willson fl. 1904-1920 began as a dance instructor with the Academy of Dancing located in the Hirsch Building but within a few years of the Exposition set up his own dance studio and was noted instructor of Waltzes. This card advertises the fact that couples could dance for .50¢ while an “Extra Lady” for .25¢ and even better for men in the very hot and humid Portland Pavilion they could dance without their coats in Shirt Waists. Caughey 1851-1925 was an Ohio Civil War veteran an itinerant chalk plate artist and had just created the year before in Feb. 1904 a Birds-Eye view reproduced over two pages in the Lewis and Clark Journal with noted birds-eye artist and cartographer Fred Routledge 1871-1936. Caughey began producing birds eye views in and around Portsmouth NH in the 1880’s and eventually became a commercial artist and newspaper editor in Portland Oregon where he would often produce images for the Mutual Label & Lithographic Co.
